This is just how I think it works and how I set my defense.

WR Count first (hoping to find away around this tomorrow)
Distance
Inside or Outside Rush Defense
Blitz Yes or No
Zone or Man

So if I want to blitz a team with 1 certain play every 3rd and long I set my tactics to 100% Blitz Short Pass and only have that play as my Short Blitz play in the playbook for that WR count. If I have too, I put in zone dummy plays with the same distance settings and set tactics as 0% Zone for 3rd and Long.

I think my confusion is between short/medium/inside/outside. There are so many crossovers that it just kinda sucks.

Offense you know exactly what you are getting. Defense, unless you followed a certain letter to a T, you get a mixed bag of results. At least that is my experience from the short/medium/inside/outside stuff.

If it says Inside or Outside those are exclusive running play defenses that all have a distance of Short. So if you put 100% inside rush defense as your 2nd and Short you would call only the plays labeled as Inside Rush. If you did not have a play in the playbook labeled inside rush, for example a 4-5 WR set, I think the tactics will select the play for you from your playbook based on the distance to go. If you want to narrow down that random selection, you can throw in zone plays and select 0% zone. If I'm typing shit you already know just tell me and I'll shut up.

Agreed. It took me a little while to figure out how to set up a defensive gameplan correctly. It's still not without its problems and could use a facelift hopefully this offseason.

Here's where the confusion sets in though. Plays marked both pass and run defense. I assume it plays off both settings of run and pass? And even when you get it down to the idea of doing things by the book you have to figure out workarounds just to say use a good short run blitz on 3rd and long without worrying a defense with a similar tag that would get burnt bad pops into the equation.

I'd love it if the dai rivaled the OAI with packages and you set the distances. Makes more logical sense when you are trying to make the game more intuitive for newer users.

As far as getting the play called, don't look at anything after the / . It's irrelevant, if the play says Short 1-3WR Pass/Run Man Defense you get that play called by selecting Short Pass and whether its a blitz play or not. The Run Man Defense means nothing besides that its a man defense.

Hmm could swear I just had problems with just that line of thinking against Portland an hour ago but I'll have to look deeper when I finally get to a computer later.

I really burned myself to start this season trying to figure this out. I actually scrapped the D I was working on and went back to what I had in season 1. It wasn't the greatest D but it was effective. After reading this thread I finally get it, it would be nice if you could set the AI by formation then down and distance thou. Thanks for clearing up our current system for me thou. Thanks guys

Good game, TT - really close and thought we had it, and then thought we might actually make the last second comeback.

You ruined Alpine's brief stay at #2 after Maine lost, though. Top teams are REALLY close for us to drop from #2 to #8 with many of those teams still to play.
