2009 Update on Tucson Nighthawks

many things have happened over the course of last season including getting caught without a powerback & having an average season by Nighthawks standards.

The Nighthawks went 9-7 & made the playoffs despite many shortcomings in the ULTRA competitave AA#4 conference. Our coaches spent many hours on gameplans & player builds to keep us in games and we did well because of their amazing work.

Mr Moses & Rip have been amazing & are the glue that keeps this team rolling. I cannot say enough about their work & work ethic. Thanks guys!!

Ok For the new season

We completed our stadium a cool 6-million in upgrades to maximize seating & revenue, This will help with keeping up with the skyrocketing equipment costs.

Were looking to add a stud power-back to complete our 3-HB rotation

A receiving TE threat ****DONE*****

A upgrade at the Tackle position to protect the best QB in the game.

That's about it, we are going to make some noise this year so keep your eyes out for game-by-game updates all season long.

Tucson Hooks Moon Sharks In Overtime

With a little more than 11 minutes to play in the 2nd quarter and trailing by a bakers dozen to the Orlando Moon Sharks Tucson Head Coach Pontiacnutt gathered his team together on the sideline and animatedly gave what team members later described as a "heated" pep talk before sending his team back out on offense. "He let both sides of the ball know real quick we weren't getting the job done" said Nighthawks QB Stonewall Gunner. In his post game press conference Nutt was quick to point out that it wasn't just the players who did a poor job early in the game, "We did a very poor job of having the team ready to play at the start of the game" he admitted adding "I made our bad start worse when I decided to go for it on 4th down in our own territory. Fortunately our defense managed to hold them to a field goal or we could have just as easily been down by 17".

The Nighthawks offense responded driving 53 yards, 39 of them on the ground, before stalling at the Moon Sharks 27 yard line. Tucson kicker DeadNutz On was good on his field goal attempt cutting the deficit to 10. The Nighthawks pounded Orlando on the drive with tailbacks Kenny Watson and Blah Dow alternating carries. "The staff felt like we'd be able to run the ball coming into the game" said Watson. "We struggled a little early but once we got going we were really able to wear their line down".

Tucson followed up a few minutes later with another field goal drive just before the half to cut the score to 13 - 6 Orlando. The drive was set up by the Nighthawks defense when strong safety Rip Urheadoff intercepted a Moon Sharks pass giving the offense the ball near mid-field. Gunner went 5 for 5 on the drive for 38 yards but the Nighthawks were forced to settle for the field goal with just 23 seconds remaining in the half. "We could have taken another shot at the endzone but with us out of timeouts a sack might have prevented us from scoring all together" said Nutt adding, "I thought it was important for us to get points in that situation to give us momentum heading into the 2nd half".

The Nighthawks evened the score up to open the 2nd half driving 80 yards again using their power running game. The drive was capped by tailback Kenny Watsons 2 yard touchdown plunge. Watson carried the ball 6 times on the drive for 30 yards. "Our line came out in the 2nd half and was really blowing them off the ball" said Watson, "It was just a matter of following my blocks". Watson's touchdown run was set up by a 15 yard pass from Gunner to wideout Brad Mercer that gave the Nighthawks a 1st and goal inside the Moon Sharks 5 yard line. "Gunner saw them laying off me at the line and audibled us into the slip screen" Mercer said, "SeeYouInYourEndzone gave me a great block to get me to the corner".

Orlando took the lead right back on their ensuing drive. Using their passing game as they had all game long they reached the Nighthawks 27 yard line before stalling and having to settle for a 44 yard field goal to take a 16 - 13 lead. "They had allot of success throwing the ball on us tonight" admitted Tucson DC Moses, "but we did manage to get good pressure on their QB's and come away with a couple of key picks". The Tucson defense finished the night allowing nearly 400 yards passing despite garnering 6 sacks and 12 hurries to go along with their 2 interceptions.

The 2nd Nighthawk interception, this one by Cro Marty, ended a Moon Sharks drive into Tucson territory. Thanks in part to a 14 yard completion from Gunner to TE Pooh Duggins the Nighthawks drove down inside Moon Sharks territory where they again tied the score up with a little over 9 minutes left in regulation on a 57 yard field goal. Kicker DeadNutz On had plenty of leg on the kick which he managed to sneak just inside the left upright.

Tuscon's defense stepped up big on the Moon Sharks next possession with 4 consecutive sacks. Angus Moses, Derrick Thomas, and Mike Lorenzo feasted on Orlando's quarterbacks to set up a 4th and 25 for the Moon Sharks from their own 38 yard line. Orlando rolled the dice and came up snake eyes on an unsuccessful fake punt when their punter attempted to throw for a first down only to be sacked by Derrick Thomas, his 2nd of 3 sacks on the night. "I think that's the first time I've ever seen that" laughed DC Moses adding, "They actually caught us by surprise with the fake punt. DT just made a great move to come up with the sack".

The offense wasted little time taking advantage of the great field position. Just 3 plays later Quarterback Stonewall Gunner found his big TE Pooh Duggins for a 27 yard touchdown pass to give Tucson it's first lead of the night with just 3:21 left in the 4th quarter. "I ran a post corner" said Duggins, "I beat their linebacker off the line and their safety was slow to react".

The Nighthawks were unable to hold the lead though. The Moon Sharks put together a 10 play, 66 yard drive capped by a 12 yard touchdown pass with 1:34 left in regulation to again tie the score. Tucson dodged a bullet in the last minute of the game after a Gunner interception set Orlando up with a chance to win the game. The Moon Sharks came up just short of field goal range as time ran out to send the game into overtime.

After Tucson won the toss they opened their drive with Watson picking up 7 yards on a 1st down carry. On 2nd and short yardage Gunner again came up big finding wideout Shayde Black in man coverage. Black made the catch and nearly went the distance gaining 35 yards down Moon Sharks 39 yard line. After Watson picked up 6 yards on 1st down Gunner completed back to back passes for gains of 18 and 6 yards to give Tucson a 2nd and 5 from the Orlando 10 yard line. "We figured they'd be looking run" said Coach Nutt, "so we went with play action". The run fake froze Orlando's free safety again allowing Duggins to get open on the post/corner for the winning score, a 10 yard touchdown pass from Gunner.

***Stat of the Game***

We could go with.........
Kenny Watson's 110 yards rushing for an average of 4.6 yards per carry and 1 rushing TD

Or we could use........
Derrick Thomas's 7 tackles, 3 sacks, and 2 hurries

But I think I'll go with........
QB Stonewall Gunner's 18 of 21 passing effort for nearly 86 percent completion percentage, 199.5 yards passing, 2 touchdowns and 9.5 yards per attempt.

Tucson Goes Beserk On RGB

Published March 27, 2009

A couple of GLB seasons ago this game would have been a headliner between two of the leagues best teams. This season not so much. Whereas the Nighthawks have consistently been in the top 4 teams in the Western Conference this season, the Beserk have been been at the other end of the spectrum with tonight's loss sinking them to 3-12. Using the standings coming in to this one you could pretty much safely assume it as a blowout and Tucson delivered with a 36-7 thrashing of the RGB Beserk.

The question of whether it was hard to prepare a playoff bound team against such a poor quality opponent seemed to rankle Tucson Head Coach Nutt "Maybe we're successful doing it because unlike sportswriters we know every team has to be taken seriously". Nutt continued, "I mean you guys have to write a story about a lop sided blowout, so using your logic I guess we shouldn't expect much of an effort". As to his teams success in tonight's game Nutt was more forthcoming stating, "The staff put together a very good game plan on both sides of the ball. On offense we wanted to be successful running the ball. We felt that if we kept a fresh pair of legs in the game at tailback we would eventually wear down their front 7. We had 6 different backs carry the ball tonight. Our passing game was again pretty efficient. They managed to get some pressure on Gunner but we were able to protect well enough that we didn't allow any sacks".

The Nighthawks offensive efforts started with their opening drive. On a 2nd and 10 Gunner found Neon Bodeaux up the left side for a 23 yard gain. New tailback pickup Steve Otter quickly followed that by taking a pitch and sweeping around the right side thanks in part to a key block by Bodeaux. Otter rambled on for 22 yards before being forced out of bound at the RGB 19 yard line. The Nighthawks drive stalled there and kicker DeadNutz On was called on to give Tucson a 3-0 lead from 33 yards out.

The lead became 6-0 a few minutes later when the Nighthawks were again forced to settle for a field goal attempt. Tucson took possession of the ball on the RGB 33 yard line, set up there by ThrowDaBallMyWay's 15 yard punt return. They only netted 5 yards on the drive thanks to 2 Steve Otter carries, and were forced to settle for the 45 yard field goal attempt.

Just minutes later the Nighthawks took possession of the ball at their own 20 yard line and immediately began using their running game to move down field. A 10 yard run by Otter, An 11 yard sweep by David "The Deuce" Palmer, 5 yards off tackle by Kenny Watson, followed by a 12 yard hook up between Gunner and Hans McGergon set Tucson up at the RGB 42 yard line. 1 rush for a loss and 2 incomplete pass attempts later led the Nighthawks to again attempt another field goal, this one from 60 yards away. DeadNutz On's attempt was short leaving the score at 6-0.

Tucson again took possession just before the end of the 1st quarter. Runs by Watson, Otter, and Moses netted a 1st down just across midfield. A hook up between Gunner and Black left the Nighthawks with a 2nd and inches. Coach Nutt looking to take advantage of his strong rushing attack went to the play action pass where Gunner found Brad Mercer in man coverage up the left side for a 18 yard connection. After a 2 yard gain by Otter on a dive play Gunner set the Nighthawks up with a first and goal when he hooked up with his big TE Han McGergon for a 19 yard gain down to the RGB 8 yard line. "We lined up in a 5 wide" said McGergon, " they lined up in a dime package which left me covered with a corner. I'll take that matchup anyday". There would be no settling for field goals this time as Watson took a handoff on 1st and goal and rambled 8 yards up the middle to make the score 13-0.

After RGB had achieved their lone score of the night the Nighthawks wasted no time answering right back with a 9 play, 57 yard drive to take a 20-7 lead. Tucson started the drive off with a 8 yard pass connection from Gunner to Black. Backup fullback Donald Ray Hutson picked up the first down on a 3 yard carry down to the Beserker's 44 yard line. Two plays later the passing game again came up big when wideout Glue Traphd went up and over RGB corner Soup Nazi for a 20 yard reception from Gunner giving the Nighthawks a 1st down at the RGB 25 yard line. After a gain of less than one and an incomplete pass attempt between Gunner and Bodeaux left Tucson with a 3rd and a long 9, Tucson again went to it's passing game with Shayde Black coming down with the big catch. "They were in a basic cover 2. "The corner played me tight from the line of scrimmage and the free safety rotated over to my side to help with the double team. When I made my turn I saw the pass had been thrown short and I was able to pull up and make an adjustment on the ball". Coach Nutt thought the play showed the connection between his Quarterback and Receivers. "Gunner was in trouble from the get go" he said, "he bought just enough time by stepping up in the pocket for Shayde to get downfield. When he made the pass he was on his back foot because of the pass rush. That caused the pass to come up short but Shayde made a great adjustment. He pulled up and the defenders went right past him". The reception gave Tucson a 1st and goal at the RGB 5 yard line. After Otter was stuffed for a 3 yard loss the passing game again came through with Gunner hitting TE Pooh Duggins for the 8 yard touchdown pass.

After the Tuscon defense set their offense up near midfield via a Cro Marty interception the passing game stepped up and methodically moved the team down the field. Completions of 11, 10 14, 7, and 6 yards left the Nighthawks with a 1st and goal just shy of the goal line where starting fullback Amos Moses took a lead handoff and made the score 27-7.

Just a few plays later the Tucson offense again had the ball back courtesy of their defense. Linebacker Derrick Thomas forced a RGB fumble that was recovered by IBStuffingholes at the Beserk's 21 yard line. 2 incomplete passes and a 3 yard plunge by Blah Dow left the Nighthawks forced to attempt a field goal. DeadNutz On was good from 36 yards out making the score 30-7.

Punt returner Throw-"DaBall"-MyWay set up the next Tucson drive with a great punt return of 24 yards to set the offense up at the Beserk's 48 yard line. Kenny Watson got things started off with a 7 yard run behind right guard. After Gunner hooked up with Black for another 12 yards giving the NIghthawks another first down, this one at the RGB 30 yard line, Watson again went behind right guard for a gain of 7 yards. Blah Dow converted the first down on a carry of 5 yards. After an incomplete pass to Black and a 4 yard run by Blah Dow, Gunner again tried to hook up with Pooh Duggins but the pass was behind him leaving the Nighthawks facing another 4th down. Once again DeadNutz On was called on for the field goal attempt. The kick sailed through from 33 yards out leaving the score 33-7.

Tucson had to again settle for a field goal on their next possession making the score 36-7. Starting at their own 33 yard line the Nighthawks used a strong mix of run and pass to reach the RGB 21 yard line before being forced into the field goal attempt. Gunner was 2 of 3 passing on the drive for 21 yards while Otter and Watson added another 14 yards on the ground. DeadNutz On's attempt hooked just inside the left upright from 38 yards away.

The final score of the game came on a short field courtesy of Tuscon's special teams. Heavy pressure on the Beserk's punter forced a short line drive kick that was returned 19 yards to the RGB 34 yard line. Though the Nighthawks offense was able to pick up a first down they again stalled short of the endzone and were forced to kick another field goal this one from 35 yards away to make th final score 39-7.

"Our defense played lights out tonight" said DC Moses adding, "anytime you hold a team in this league to negative yardage rushing you've accomplished something. Moses was also pleased with his pass defense. "We held them to under 7 yards per attempt and less than 200 yards passing while managing to sack their QB 12 times. You certainly can't complain about that".

When asked about the upcoming contest against Putnam County Nutt would only say, " They're a tough group. Tomorrow we'll start breaking down the flim from this game. Once we've done that we can start watching film on the Kegger's and getting together a game plan". Asked if they'd not already done some game planning against Putnam Nutt admitted, "Sure we've seen some film on them while preparing for other teams. You might see little things that you file away for later on. Things you think you might be able to take advantage of. They'll be a challenge, that's for sure".

***Stat of the Day***

We could go with.................

12 and 8,......... The number of sacks and hurries accumulated by the Nighthawks offense.

............or, we could use..............................

0,...........the number of drops by the Nighthawks receiving corp.

..............or maybe even.................

35......the yards per punt return by Tucson return man "Throw "DaBall" My Way"

............but I think we'll go with.......

-0.6,.......the yards per carry Tuscon's defense gave up in 33 rush attempts.
