Have not had to fight a naval infection in a newborn calf in almost 8 years until today. Arghhh, helpless feeling when the outcome can be anything from a quick and complete recovery to a partial recovery and the infection can settle in the joints and cause issues and poor performance for the rest of the animals life (bad deal when it is a bull calf with the genetic potential to be a breeding bull) to the antibiotic not working quick enough and the infection enters the blood stream and spreads through the entire body which is fatal. Have to watch for an umbilical hernia as well, the swelling from the infection can create a hole in the abdomen, could also develop a painful abscess which will require an incision and physically draining the puss (hopefully before fly season).
Hoping like hell that a quick diagnosis and treatment will prevent the worst case scenario as the calf has improved in the 5 hours since being treated but I hate the waiting game.

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do when ya farm, CP. We had a calf from a yearling that died giving birth. We tried to get one of the other cows to take her in but it was a no go... so we brought the calf into the house and bottle fed her until she was ready to go back with the herd again. Took about 6 months of calf-in-the-house to get to that point. Must say it was an adventure. turned out ok though.

It sounds gross but the most effective way to foster a calf to a cow that has lost her calf is to skin the calf that died and then drape the hide over the calf you want the cow to take as her own. I usually make cuts in the hide and tie it around all 4 legs and the belly but not tight. After 3 days you remove the hide (it will start to stink) and the cow will still take the calf. It has always worked for me.

I saw that done in Silence of the Lambs.

It is basically the same thing. It's gross but it works and instead of feeding a cow an entire year while getting nothing out of her and spending the time and money bottling a calf for a few months, Momma cow raises a foster calf, the calf is healthier and happier and all you have to do is spend 10 minutes skinning an already dead calf.

It is looking good, he is responding well to the antibiotics and I will hit him again in 2 more days with another treatment to make sure it is all cleaned up. Has enough energy now where it is a challenge to catch him.
Had 3 more hit the ground in the last hour and am on my way back out to check a first calf heifer that had feet sticking out of her back end, beautiful warm day and it is dry but they are talking 6-12" of wet heavy snow starting tomorrow morning so I might be busy and treating more scours in the next few days but this is my favorite time of the year, absolutely love calving cows and spending the bulk of my time in the barn. Another 45 days of getting up every 3 hours over night will have me wore out but I wouldn't trade this job for anything in the world.

70 degrees yesterday, blizzard today. Just another day in Colorado. Sad I do not have a snow day

Was just about to post something along those lines. It's Spring Break for me right now and people are getting snowed in
How bad is it up there? The lady and I have tickets to the Avs game tomorrow, and I'm seeing ridiculous totals and predictions already

It was bad this morning with the wind. Visibility was brutal driving to work, and with it being a wet snow it was fairly slick. I'd say we have about 8-10 inches right now. What about down South?
It's suppose to be in the 50's tomorrow you'll be fine if you can get up here.
and I'm off at noon
