Do you take long hikes regularly? If not then you didn't warm up nor cool down properly. I love to kayak... but not in 20 degree weather. So every spring when it warms up, I can't wait to get back on the water. Despite whatever work I do in the winter, working the shoulders and arms as you do when you kayak all day is simply different. So I make sure I stretch for at least 30 minutes before I start the day. I also use tigerbalm on the shoulders and arm muscles before starting out to warm them up and loosen them up. Once the day is done, I sit in the cold water up to my neck for about 30 minutes, gently moving my arms about... cooling down. Really helps keep the cramps and aches to a minimum. Once summer hits, I'm back to 'normal' and don't need as much warm up/cool down work as I do when I first start out. Hiking wouldn't be any different.

In my experience, warming up never did anything for me. But cooling down is everything.

It will hurt as much or more on day 2. It's your inflamed muscles actually healing. That can be mitigated by a post stretch, ice. ....but if you are doing an exercise you normally don't do then you are gonna be sore.

I used to semi-regularly then I said fuck it and went for a 9 mile total hike Friday. I didn't use anything before or after because nothing hurt until I woke up Monday. Worked Saturday and Sunday with no issues. It was weird, never had that long of a break between the exercise and the recovery. Didn't warm up or cool down though. Kinda got out of my car, went off, came back, and drove home.

But Saturday and Sunday they were entirely fine. Like.. Zero pain whatsoever.

Seems like there are a few things happening that you aren't used to.

I wonder what's changed..or is changing ?

Yup! I remember going out to play full court basketball after about a year off of playing at all in my 30's. Three days later I could not freaking break into a brisk walk to save my life.

The sad thing is, wasn't even drunk last night.

My best bet is fat fingering my old crappy laptop's touchpad after my desktop's hard drive died.
