Seth, is that how you would do it ("sitting there in a darkened room") were there a possible event at your residence? It just strikes me that as the Male caretaker, the room might be darkened but I'm not going to be sitting--I'm going to be standing in case I need to do something and that I'm going to be near a door/window/whatever so that I can be gathering as much intel as possible *ahead* of any possible encounter.

you're dead on. I said 'sitting', but that was the kids. the students were sitting in the corner on the floor, but I stood close to the center of the room the whole time, listening. our procedures here are that the lockdown is over when an administrator or the school cop unlocks the door, enters, and says we're clear. when I heard voices in the hall, I walked quietly towards the door (blinds on the door window) and stood beside it. when the admin unlocked and opened the door, I stepped right into the doorway. it startled him a bit, which I liked, since if he was a shooter, etc, that startling might have given me the split second I needed.

Personally I think schools should begin adding panic rooms
