The higher early drop rate could also be a reaction to the length it took to win last season. In the prior season cowtesticles2001 won after week 15. So participants who were paying attention may have foregone a playoff team strategy in order to try to last until week 16 to win, causing more teams to survive early on last year. Whereas, last year the winner lasted through the conference championship. So strategies may have been altered accordingly and are therefore more risky.

I think this is the primary reason.
