This is true if you're specifying player builds to fit your scheme. The other way is to just recruit whatever players you can get, and then figure out what kind of scheme can feature/utilize the gang you've got.
Spec teams are easier to run, 'cause the scheme is set when the players are built. And they generally perform better.
Building a defense with a variety pack is harder, but there is satisfaction to be had when you find a novel way to incorporate an eccentric player build.
