I'm fine with tournaments instead, like I said earlier everything TxSteve said makes sense to me, but everyone should keep up their complaining IMO, it's added to my enjoyment of the thread.

Leagues are good for what they are.
The ladder is good for what it is.
Neither really produces an actual "best team"

Tournaments would be a nice addition on top of that.

I doubt anything would really solve the "best team" question any better than just discussion threads on who the best teams were for a tier that season. I don't think enough people care to put together a voted on top 10 ranking kind of thing, but maybe.

Football seasons are way too short to be a big enough sample size to ever determine who the best is, I agree there.

My personal agenda is wanting to play against all the best teams every season in a meaningful setting, I care less about crowning the best team. Tournaments sound awesome for that, a tournament of champions would be hype as fuck.

Also, the way to address the issue of too much downtime for teams that lose in tournaments is to make them Swiss (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss-system_tournament) instead of single elimination. The football playoffs in real life are only structured the way they are because teams need a week to recover, that's not an issue in GLB.

Speaking in hypothetical and dreams, yeah a "tournament of champions" would be pretty awesome.

But in reality, what is it? Is it just "top ladder people play each other once"? Doesn't sound much different than ladder. Is it "league champions play each other"? Then it's going to be like #1 ladder team competing against like #7, #13, and #19 and some other cannon fodder teams.

Is it single elimination? That's always pretty awful for "finding out who is the best". Round Robin would be better, but that's a lot of games throughout the season, which leads to...

When does it seed? If it's a round robin type tournament, it's going to need to be seeded early in the season. What happens when another team enters the top 10 after it seeds? They are just left out of the tournament for the top 10, while the now ranked #16 stays in it?

I don't disagree that it would be interesting, but there's plenty of issues with thinking it would be the end all of finding the best team. At best it would be a secondary ladder game against similarly ranked teams with a different icon beside it.

quite possible the top 3 teams in GLB2 are in Mars League (Hawaii, HBurg, and Air Raid)... so that's a mini elite playoff as it is

That likely is only 2 of the top 3. Nothing against you guys but I would put Hawaii at #1, Air Raid #2, Minnesota #3. Then it's a toss up for the next few spots beyond that with New Jersey, HBurg, and Salty

Back when we had 10-12 leagues per age bracket a TOC made a ton of sense. That's why I tried to run one back in season 3 (I think). Now that the age brackets have leveled off at no more than 6 leagues per group, they aren't as intriguing.

I do think there could be value in tournaments, though.

Salty is 0-3 against top 10 teams this season including losing to rusty so I'm not really ready to place them in that tier of teams yet.

The only reason I had them up there is because they can hold their own against any run team. They are pretty much guaranteed to lose vs top pass teams but not many teams can shut down the run as good as them.

I would probably have them at the bottom of those teams I have listed above. Portland also could be considered for that top 6-7 spot

Seed midseason a do it swiss style so everyone plays the same number of games, this way the teams that are winning continue to play against winning teams and visa versa. Right now you can get matched up against the #1 team on the ladder one day, then a team ranked in the 20s right after, the tournament actually builds up to something instead of being a pile of random games with no storyline.
