I know I'm a bit late on the military conversation but I was in the U.S. Army from 2000 until 2004. I did two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. I was in communications setting up satcom links. I was injured in Iraq on my second tour and med boarded out 3 months before my 4 years was up. We used to let guys from all branches of the military us our links to call home whenever they wanted. We had a group of Marines that made some calls before they were KIA in Iraq. They were ambushed by the Iraqi's pretending to surrender. My tour in Afghan was from March 2002 to November 2002 and on our flight back to the states they diverted us to Kuwait.. I spent from November 2002 until July 2003 in Kuwait/Iraq. Came home for 4 months until November 2003 and got deployed again to Iraq until May 2004. I spent time in 286th Signal Co. and 11th Signal Brigade.
I'll tell you that there is no better feeling than climbing up a 200 foot tower to replace an antenna. Knowing that you are an easy target for anyone with a decent shot. The climb itself gives you plenty of time to think.
Thanks for your service Armyvet, honestly i have tons of respect for almost all who serve. But there's a select few who need to make a few of those climbs so they can reflect on how they treat their fellow man. I make light of my time in the Gulf, as I was rarely in danger, but those on the ground were in a very different situation.
