You want the inner sock to stick to your foot and the outer sock to stick to the boot, so that the movement/friction exists between the socks.
So you would want to powder your foot after putting on the first sock to ease movement between those layers.I just posted what worked for me.
The concept is that the powder absorbs sweat. I never considered the lubricating properties of the powder. Multiple layers means water gets taken away from the skin.
Polyp and wool or a gortex type sock would work great too.
Hell, I went through 2 weeks at Ft Greely in February working outside and living in tents wearing just thick Poly P and gortex shell (with VB Boots, arctic mittens and a Balaclava of course).
That hawk screaming in at 40mph with the ambient temps at -15 on average can kick your ass, but that US Army Arctic gear was marvelous.
