We have put down 3 dogs over the past 15 years. Its also worth noting that we have never had them from puppies, we always get dogs from the pound or strays that someone dumps off on the road. So yea, we have gotten dogs who were already pretty old and all 3 were somewhere in the 16-21 range from out best estimates.

I didn't react to Cowpoker's post to me because I don't really care if he's a piece of shit since I already knew that he was. What annoyed me was him later trying to justify his enjoyment of killing dogs by saying that you were being " incredibly selfish" by not going ahead and killing yours after you mentioned her pain issues.

I am not embarrassed at all jd, if a dog is on my property, he will most likely be shot. The exceptions are the half dozen neighbor dogs, they generally get 1-2 warnings, if their owners have not controlled their dogs at that point, then they will be shot too. It sucks that the dog has to pay the price for a shitty owner who has not trained, has not neutered, does not spend time with a bored dog or does not have the proper facilities or equipment to contain his dog but I can't really shoot the owner.
When I have had dogs that are old or get injured, I put them down, I don't know where you are getting the enjoyment part of the equation from me having to shoot dogs but this isn't the first time you have professed to know people or suggest that you have a better understanding of their personalities, sort of a pattern of behavior for you.
Truth is that I do not have to justify those actions, don't really need to justify the posts either but since this is a forum, why not.
I do take some enjoyment when you suggest that option to someone or talk about dog shooting and they get all emotional and lash out or when you joke with someone and they get overly sensitive about it. I think that is pretty funny.

Drugging up a dog that is in pain due to injury, illness or old age just because you are emotionally attached to it and don't have the balls to deal with the pending loss is sadistic and selfish in my opinion. It might be normal in the sense that the majority of animal owners go that route but still does not make it right and you sure as hell are not making that decision with your dogs quality of life in mind.
