Realistically, who would actually fall for a catch fake? Pump fakes, sure. But how about a % chance for a fumble or an incomplete pass at your feet when you pump fake? I don't have the answers, but this is supposed to be a similation and while I don't expect it to be 100% accurate--common sense goes a long way.

Would it be okay if they changed the name to "Route running fake" or something similar?

Aha, I looked for forty fucking minutes for this play, but I found it.

Check out Rod Smith at 0:23 of this video:

That's a perfect example of how a catch fake should work (not to mention a hell of a move faking out Asomugha). Smith was a master at that move, and would often even hold his hands up like he was going to catch it.

Catch fake (as well as pump fakes) need to fire on route changes or alterations. That's the reason they are effective irl.

Yeah, must happen all the time if it took you 40 minutes to find an example of it

Catch fakes, or slight variations of them, actually happen quite often against man coverage. The defender is most likely going to be keying on the WR/TE's body language and will either look back for the ball when the WR/TE raises their hands or will start to make a play to deflect the incoming ball.

I concur. They'll generally happen multiple times per game, but be very subtle for the most part. Generally the idea is just to get the DB to take one wrong step, which will then allow the receiver to create some separation.

the problem with subtle-ing up catch fake is that then it becomes look off most likely... useless. ballhawk + qb's inability to lead wr's + 99% of int's happening underneath passes would = catch fake being absolutely terrible if it was toned down.

i dont know what the solution is, but it probably isnt an easy one.

I've got another example in a 2005 game versus Dallas, but it doesn't show the route - just the wide open receiver. Plummer throws a lob to Smith, and despite the poor pass, the defender isn't anywhere close. Rod made him look like an idiot.
