seriously. first thing I do when I get my hands on any gun is open it and check. even if it is passed to me from a person whom I watched do the exact same thing. I was looking at guns in llbean this weekend, and a few other customers gave me a weird look when I was opening the breech on every shotgun I picked up (in the market for a double barrell 20 ga). it's fucking guns 101.

The worst is when people put their fingers on the trigger when they are handling the gun, and then they muzzle sweep you.

They do have stripped down versions. I keep recommending the 4runner because it really is a quality vehicle, and it can be used like a truck. I was very impressed by the build quality when I handled the thing. They have soccer mom features, yes but you can also get them stripped down. In my opinion it is right now the best option for an off-road/adventure vehicle. It uses tried and true technology, and I find them fun to drive. It takes a lot to impress me when it comes to cars, and the 4runner did it. I just recommend you test drive and see what you think. You may end up falling in love, another thing to mention is that it is built on the same platform as the Tacoma.

If you do decide on the xterra, avoid the cvt transmission at all cost.

You're not the only one I've seen advise that--what do you base your objection on? I had one in a crossover SUV and got 90,000 miles out of it without incident before selling the vehicle.

I don't think the Xterra has a CVT. Pretty sure it's a 5 speed auto or a 6 speed manual.

Also, which 4runner is the striped down version? The cheapest one is north of $36k. If that is striped down, that just proves my point that they are way over priced. If the striped down one is even more expensive, that just proves my point more.

Nissan was under investigation about three years ago for faulty CVT transmissions, specifically in the 2005-2010 xterra's, Pathfinders, and Frontiers. I've heard complaints about the newer Nissan CVT transmissions as well. They do come with a good warranty now, but if you plan on keeping the thing longer than five years or 100,000 miles I would reconsider buying the SUV if it has a CVT. The replacements for CVT transmissions are pretty pricey.

Pithy, I just checked and the Xterra has never had a CVT in it.

One night about 2am a friend comes in and is holding it in the middle of the living room, he asked if it was loaded and i said "nah its not loaded" and i pulled the trigger for him. a 12g slug went through the ceiling of our apartment and into the upstairs neighbors living room and through their coffee table. My friend and i looked at eachother and then jumped out the back window. i got about 100 ft away and then thought about it. i couldnt let my friend Chad take the wrap for that, so i went back and waited for the cops(we got all illegal stuff out of the house of course). It was a legal gun, so i just said i was cleaning it and it went off. i didnt even get a ticket.

but Chad did get evicted.

I almost cost myself an eye making my dad a keychain out of a shell casing. I'd seen it done before so, as an 8 year old kid, I figured I could make my own. So, I took a 22 caliber long rifle bullet and took out the bullet part... then emptied the powder out... even made sure to wash it so there would be no residue left. Then I melted the lead and poured it back into the casing so I could put in the metal hook for the chain part. I... um... forgot about the primer cap built into the rimfire style bullet. It blew the molten lead right back into my face and into my eyes. I still can see 'false images' that look like snakes when I sit in certain rooms (generally white/light colored walls, well lit, with no patterns on them) but that's all the damage I got. Fortunately. Now talk to me about shotgun shells in phone poles and bullets on train tracks.

Those camoflage hats (and headphones, and other items) that the NFL has worn all week look terrible. There's not a one of them that I found myself thinking "I'd wear that".

I never understood why people keep guns beside the door. If someone breaks in, you're essentially giving them a gun. My uncle used to brag about all the guns he had in the gun cabinet beside the door. It's like...oh, so if someone breaks in they get five thousand dollars worth of guns and a selection to choose from if they want to use it against you.

I guess unless you're living in some kind of situation where you routinely need the shotgun when you answer your door.

I've done that for critter shooting but it was prior to having kids and home defense was never part of the equation.
