So, I test drove a Forester this weekend and it fucking sucks. Back to the drawing board.
Yeah, I have already called pretty much every dealer in the country that still has a new one in the trim I am looking for. There are a couple out in OR that are being reasonable. The ones in PA that are nearish to me want several k over sticker. Those are the closest.
BTW, my understanding of why it was cancelled is because of CAFE and the model was at the end of it's run, so they weren't going to redesign it.That is part of it, they deemed it not worth the investment to bring it up to cafe standards. The rise of crossovers drove the XTERRA out of the market. It didn't get the gas mileage of the crossovers, and as an offroad rig, while capable was still inferior to the Wrangler, and the 4runner. The XTERRA was losing its market share really quickly, and really it doesn't surprise me.
If I were you I would go test drive a 4runner, they are really, really nice vehicles with tons of utility. It's a body on frame vehicle, and all of the components on the thing are high quality, and beefy. The 4runner is also very comfortable, despite being very rugged, it may be worth it to spring for 4runner. You can practically use the thing as a pickup truck, the seats fold down flush to the floor:
