What reasonable couch/bed computing can't be done from a phone nowadays? He's already got an old laptop that would be perfectly fine if he wanted to write a school paper or something like that on the couch. Microsoft Word/Google Chrome doesn't require a new laptop. That's exactly why jd is suggesting a Chromebook (essentially a low end laptop). It's the same mentality.

A desktop provides him with an addition to his available set instead of buying something for things it's not ultimately good at.

i dont want to buy something new only to have to use this old shitty slow lap top anymore when I dont want to be sitting at a desk top (which is like 90% of the time). Completely defeats the purpose of this. Plus I do not want to have to do all my browing/read and such while on the couch on my phone.
