every year when we get to the naming compounds unit I hand out a sheet to the kids about the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide, telling them that as a chemist, I get sent briefings about new warnings about chemicals. I tell them to look at this, talk to their parents about it, check to see if the chemical is in any of their home products, etc. Typically I get a couple of chuckles and small smiles from a few of them. two or three times I've had kids come back the next day and tell me that their parents are concerned and ask if I have more information about it.

Ignoring the stupidity of them saying "I'm vegan except for when I'm not vegan", Veganism itself is idiotic. Morality and taste-based arguments can be made in support of vegetarianism but how do you support "I will not use any product that was in any way associated with animals or insects at any point including honey, white sugar, and many medications"

So basically just something that will let you use the internet, type something and maybe play a small game or something every now and then without shitting the bed? What's your price range?

Just go to Best Buy. Not because you'll get THE BEST COMPUTER EVER! But instead because you can see a wide selection of trade-offs between power and price. Somewhere in that store (or one of their other locations) is a SWEET tradeoff between power and money that checks all of your boxes. Update this thread when you're choosing between one or two.

1. Build a desktop.
2. Use your phone while on couch or car.
3. Use your old laptop in the rare situations you actually need a laptop.

Chromebooks are super cheap and pretty solid at the non-gaming stuff. That's what I take when I'm traveling.

edit:
That said, they need access to the internet for most things. http://www.zdnet.com/article/what-chromebooks-can-do-offline/
