This guy is telling me Ah Sin by Mark Twain is completely racist and I find it very hard to believe that Mark Twain would make something like that, but I can't find any copies to verify for myself.

Here is the thing about Mark Twain -- a good portion of his work was done in a satirical context. A good example of this was Huckleberry- Finn. People see the N bomb dropped, and automatically condemn the book as racist. As a result the book has been taken off shelves in many of our public schools. When one takes a closer look at Huck Finn however, it's exactly the opposite. The slave that is on the run with Huck is portrayed as the warmest, most human one of them all. The white slave owners in this book are portrayed as inhumane monsters. Huck, himself experiences the hatred, discrimination and racism towards his new-found friend.
Twain's writings are often times misunderstood. I have never read or seen Ah Sin myself, but from what I have heard it is the same story as Huck-Finn. Much of Twain's writings challenged racism, and conventional thinking of the 1800s. When reading Twain's works people never seem to stop, and consider the era he was writing in, and what he was trying to accomplish with his works. Instead they view them through their narrow worldview, and do something foolish such as take masterpieces such as Huck-Finn out of high schools.

I keep having a random urge to get a Crown Victoria... They're kind of menacing looking cars, and nobody will dare mess with you on the road.

So I watched a guy attempt the gallon-of-milk-in-an-hour challenge last night. I think if he had some coaching, he might have made it. He drank the first half-gallon in 9 minutes. Where I think he made his mistake is that he kept going at that point. I think if he had taken a 20 or 30 minute break, his body might have had some time to "reset" and then he might have beat the challenge. Instead, he kept going.
It ended with him going upstairs and locking himself in a bathroom. We were at a bar watching last night's game--he never came downstairs after that, but needless to say there was a quarter of the gallon left and he lost.

One of the best feelings: imparting knowledge in a subject you love to students who are eager to learn about the subject. I can see why people become teachers.

I taught Tactics and planning to Engineer Officers for 7 years. Smart students, volunteers, who knew they would need what I was teaching and challenged me every day.
Outside of being a husband and father, it is the most rewarding thing that I have ever done.
Nothing like seeing that light go on.

that light is what keeps me in the classroom rather than going on to admin.
unfortunately, though, at the public high school level, at least, this:

The downside is you will be doomed to forever drive the speed limit on the highway.
