Yeah that irritates the living hell out of me. It makes me miss the 50s when people wore suits to the grocery store. Now the only time most of these heathens will touch a suit is a wedding or funeral unless god forbid they think a dress shirt and jeans are okay for that.

Wait, what's wrong with dressing comfortably for the theater? You're sitting in a dark room for 2+ hours while everyone stares at a bright screen.

Miss;
2. notice the loss or absence of

I've noticed the loss of self respect pertaining to one's wardrobe and the absence of context-based outfits in public

You can't "notice the loss or absence of" something you were never in the presence of.

Then again, I really miss having sex with Scarlett Johansson.

You can easily. I notice the absence of $1,000,000 from my bank. To notice the absence of means to note that something isn't there. I'm the semantics king, yall can't argue this ish with me.

Well, I'm sure we could, but I'd rather miss it.

I don't even own a suit and have been to plenty 'o weddings and funerals. I have one tie that I have worn when I have had to lug the casket at a funeral but I don't plan on wearing a tie to my own funeral. If a shirt and jeans are not OK, don't invite me to your wedding or funeral. Not a big fan of funerals anyway, those folks won't be coming to my funeral so it is only fair that I skip out on theirs since I trust the local newspaper that they are actually dead and don't need to double check for myself.

The good news for the author of that story is that I will never offend her since it is very unlikely that I would ever be in NY, at a broadway play, museum or tennis club.

Several commentators gave examples where we've just about given up any pretense of decorum, including the example of college athletes visiting the White House after winning championships who wore crocs or flip-flops. I'm not an Obama fan by any stretch of anyone's imagination, but there *has* to be a sense of personal responsibility when it comes to choosing what to wear when in the presence of the (alleged) leader of the free world. And if the "student athlete" can't grasp that, then his/her coaches should have.

Yeah, I spent the majority of my life living in the boonies. I never even knew a person with a suit. If a button up shirt and slacks weren't enough, we didn't go. Hell, half the men I knew who married did so in a button up and slacks.

I would call being concerned with how other people dress a messed up priority list.

When my cousin got married, all the men in the wedding party wore black dress pants/shoes and the bride actually bought us all long sleeve button up shirts and ties. After the ceremony and the picture bullshit, she walked up to us and said "You guys all look miserable in those clothes, pictures are over so you can cut the sleeves off the shirts for the reception" so we did. I can remember after about a half dozen drinks, the brides aunt bitching at all of us and one of the groomsmen told her "Your niece recommended it but don't worry, we promise to keep our sleeves on at his next wedding because you know, only about half of these things work out". The brides aunt said some more stuff but I couldn't hear it over all the laughter.

Yeah I was clearly only talking about missing the literal time frame of the 50s, not the characteristics we were discussing that were most pronounced in the 50s. Context is as important as semantics bud.

I will take a seat on my throne.
