Anyone here work out in the mornings? The seldom occasions I work out anymore tend to be evening/night before I go to bed because that's about the only time I have. If I already look like I have narcolepsy from when I wake up to like 11 will working out in the morning take what little energy I have? Do you guys notice any effect either way on energy levels working out in the morning?

Edit: I'm good enough on strength bulk for now, so it'd be pure cardio or bodyweight based maintenance exercises, 30ish minutes. Jogging/running or pushups, sit ups, jumping jacks and the like.

I find my best workouts occur in the mid to late afternoons (weekends at this point in my life). I am NOT a "morning person", and I can't even fathom doing anything that I cared about physically without FIRST having a meal and some caffiene. My hat is off to those souls who run 6 miles at 5 in the morning or who lift half of a gym at that time of day, but I don't want to do anything FUN at that time of day, much less anything that requires me to be physically and mentally focused.

On the other hand, I've walked away from FUN things to do at night because (when I'm properly focused) working out comes first.

I truly believe there are "morning people" and "night owls". I don't pretend to have a theory as to what causes such differences, but I believe the differences exist.

I much, much prefer working out at night.

There's no chance of being interrupted by friends wanting to do something, and it's generally a lot less hot and humid.

Plus I like feeling physically exhausted when going to bed, it makes it that much more comfortable. Working out in the afternoon or morning gives me enough time to not feel it by the time I go to bed.

That's where I'm at. My natural bodyclock tells me that a 2am-9am sleep schedule is the best thing for me but my work and school tell me to screw myself and force myself to 'sleep' from 11p-5:30a. It's going to suck at first because I've been on the 'wake up, shower immediately so I can get coffee and food into me as soon as f---ing possible so I don't murder someone this morning' schedule since high school. I'm hoping that maybe I can go to sleep ~30 mins earlier and wake up ~15 mins earlier so I'm getting the littlest bit more of sleep and hopefully be outside running by the time my body realizes what's happening and tells me I'm very hungry and very tired.

Btdubs you're correct, many studies firmly support that people have different circadian rhythms beyond a reasonable doubt. I haven't seen anyone hypothesize what causes them beyond the first level 'well their bodies just don't produce X chemical until Y time in Z amount, and we don't know why' either so I can't help on that front.

Mega-ditto on both of those. Gyms aren't open super late around here unfortunately, and I'm not a fan of using the equipment in my bedroom too late because myself and my room will get too hot for me to sleep, so it's been limited to evening jogging or exercising when I know it'll be cool enough outside to blow air into my room before I pass out. Just thinking of trying something different and it seems like the least crappy of the options I have.

Did you work a landscaping job in the summer or do I have you confused with someone else ?

The reason I ask is that I usually do a fair amount of physical labor early in the morning, often lifting/carrying/loading at least a ton of feed products. I don't know what is optimal in terms of a workout or how it would impact my energy level if I changed that routine though which is what you are looking for. If anything, if I stay active the entire day, I do not notice any sort of energy drop but the minute I sit still or stop, I am exhausted.

When I was younger and used to drink more, I did notice that getting up early, breaking a good sweat even when you had an awful hangover was the quickest way to feel better. I guess I benefited from not having a choice and likely would have sat my rear end on the couch for most of the next day and suffered like many of my friends did.

Yeah that's me. I was still tired as all hell but I was getting paid so I just shrugged it off. I will admit I did a lot of work with one eye open if you catch my drift. Me and the morning hours do not get along so well.

Day 1 update: Woke up early, said 'fuck that' rolled over and slept the extra 15 mins. This is going to take some extra effort.

If you were dragging ass running a shovel early in the morning, the early workout routine might be a struggle for you.

It might change with age too. In my late teens to my mid 20's, I struggled to get out of bed and likely would not have without needing to get critters fed. My body either adapted to it or it just got easier the older I got because I wake up between 4 and 5 am without an alarm and could start throwing hay bales around or feed bags within 10 minutes of leaving the sheets.

In fact, the handful of times I have stayed in a hotel for a wedding or weekend family getaway, I get extremely frustrated with the fact that there is absolutely nothing to do at 5 am in the city and it drives me insane. Creature of habit I guess but if the family is sleeping, nothing is open, what the hell can you do to pass the time. I usually walk around aimlessly or go for a 2-3 hour drive but if anyone has any ideas, I am all ears because my wife and I are taking a 3 day trip without kids for the first time since they have been born. I am looking forward to most of it but absolutely dread the mornings because she likes to sleep in once in a while and rarely gets the opportunity.
