To you maybe. The connotations behind them are vastly different.

Black guy says "My n---a!"
Hillbilly says "N---er"

Those are not the same thing.

If a white guy walks up to a group of black people and says "what's up, my n***as" he's going to get his ass kicked.

I forget, these are the same people that think f***** means something other than a homophobic slur.

Yes? How is that not making sense to you? The words fuck and shit are also different but that doesn't mean an elementary student should be allowed to say one. They're discernibly different but there is no logic to be found when asserting that since they're different one must be okay and one must not.

Um... unfortunately it DOES mean something other than a homophobic slur... or, at least, it use to. Before it became a slang term for 'gay' over in America. if you wanted a cigarette in England, you asked to bum a fag. Before that, IN America, it was a term describing wood. I've also seen it used to describe the debris left when you're welding.

As for the use of the word 'n---er', unfortunately it does seem to be accepted as normal everyday conversation among certain people... even a term of endearment. The problem is 'context' and no matter what, as long as the word holds 2 different 'contexts' in it's meaning, then there's going to be problems and issues. The easy answer is to brand the word as 'bad' (never to be confused with any other context) but then, if that answer was so easy, you'd think it'd already be done.

that's not true. a white guy can say "my n***a" or "this n***a" to his black friends. a white guy cannot go up to a random black person and say "what up n***a"

but no matter how much it angers white America, context is a real thing.

This is not true for 99.9% of white guys with black friends (even Eminem doesn't), but that's as it should be. White people have no business saying the word or its derivatives.
