There is definitely some truth in that statement (it's what made me think of think of the UCL bit in the first place), though more confused than frightened, obviously. GLB is my first MMORPG, and the trash-talking reminds me a lot of playing pick-up basketball in high school(that's not meant as a slight, by the way).
You've got the good players/MJ-types who whine or claim cheating whenever there's a foul called on them or they lose (that would be you), there's the 5 foot tall skinny kid who talks non-stop and shoots and misses whenever he gets the ball (Porch), there's the jokey Charles Barkley-type who can play and talks trash with a smile on his face whenever he gets a chance (Snaza). Unfortunately, at the moment, I seem to be the Patrick Ewing-type, the solid amiable player that can't seem to get out of the @#$(@#& playoffs.
