Down to the Wire

Well folks, it’s been a long season, but the playoff pictures are beginning to emerge.

The Cairns City Crocodiles, long the reigning champs of the Alpha Conference, have once again clinched the top-seed in Alpha and will host the Snoqualmie Wildcats at Holloways Beach Stadium in the first round of the coming playoffs. The Crocodiles lead the Vampire League with 5,318 passing yards, all of which on the arm of Crocodiles pivot Coyote Ugly, who has completed 533 of his 990 pass attempts for a completion percentage of 53.8%. Ugly’s 64 TDs and 21 INTs combine to give him a QB rating of 82. The Croc’s are clearly a pass-first team: Those 990 pass attempts are second in the league, only to the Austin Weirdos (who keep living up to their name, week-after-week). With so many pass attempts, it’s perhaps not surprising that the Crocodiles have also allowed the third most number of hurries (176), after the CPU Weirdos and Hustlers.

On the ground, the Crocodiles are less impressive, having amassed just 642 rushing yards to this point in the season. This may not prove to be an issue in the first round, however, as the Snoqualmie Wildcats have allowed the 4th most number of rushing yards this season, with 1,442, giving up an average of 96 yards a game. When it comes to the ground game in round 1, it may be a situation of a stoppable force meeting a moveable object.

The other secured matchup in the first round of the Alpha Conference playoffs will see the Capital Ravens squaring off against their old nemesis, the Memphis Tigers. These two teams have a history of meeting each other late in the regular season, and early in the post-season, and, so far, the Tigers have come away victorious. With an 8-and-7 record, the Ravens are chasing the 9-and-6 Tigers for 2nd place in the standings. If the Ravens can beat Memphis in Week 16 to tie their respective records at 9-and-7, the final standings will come down to a tie-breaker. Either way, the two teams will once again square off against each other the following week in Round 1. If familiarity breeds contempt, these upcoming back-to-back games should be classic grudge matches.

We now turn our attention to the Beta Conference. As is the case in Alpha, Week 16 in Beta promises to be a deciding week, as the 1st place New Jersey Generals visit the 2nd place Venom Dotball Academy to decide who finishes atop their conference. The two teams are separated by 1 game, and if VDA can find a way to topple the 14-and-1 Generals, they’ll finish the season in a statistical tie, meaning the final seeding will come down to a tie-breaker. Beating the Generals might be easier said than done, however. The Generals look good, leading the league in several key metrics including: fewest hurries allowed (24); fewest sacks allowed (11); fewest interceptions thrown (2); fewest rushing yards allowed (502); fewest missed tackles (87); most interceptions (39); most forced fumbles (15); fewest points allowed (126); and on, and on… The Venom are no slouches, however, and are 2nd in the league in passing yards (behind only the aforementioned Crocodiles). VDA also leads the entire league in completion percentage, completing 73.3 percent of all pass attempts. One should also note that the Academy is a close-second to the Generals in a number of league metrics we’ve just mentioned.

What does it all mean? Simple – the final week of the regular season will feature a number of key matchups you won’t want to miss! Getcha popcorn…

Should be a fun final week in Zombie league beta too. Three teams are tied at 13-2, Spaghetti's game with the Bombers could have any one of us at either 1st or 3rd.
