To be fair, I think S* are actually a hindrance in rookie. You haven't had the time to capitalize on the cheaper skill points or the higher skill caps but you still suffer the same penalty to salary. I prefer the benefits to conditioning and heart from roster depth and high contracts over the extra 10k SP I'd get from having a rookie S*. Though, your point still stands - improving your ability as a coach is always the answer.

For what it's worth, I'm also in favor of a more user friendly way to incorporate S* into the game. As a new (<2 season) player they seem overly difficult to unlock and much too impactful at a higher level to simply dismiss as unnecessary. I would personally love to start my journey into the higher leagues, but without S* players I don't feel like it's worth the investment. Maybe give S* progress for users that own teams so we can unlock them faster? This would encourage more new players to actually get involved in running a team, which is a far more rewarding way to play than just creating players. Speaking for myself, ownership vastly increased my investment in the game, leading me to buy and boost significantly more players than I otherwise would have, as well as getting me involved in the community. Using S* rewards to encourage other new players to take this same path I think could be really good for the game.
