I think more builds should be open. For example, I'd like to see the other top WR builds in Veteran so that people could figure out where the best place to put SP is. I'd be curious to see what exactly (or guesswise) is really causing Belgarion's excessive performance (almost 60% more yards than then the #2 WR). Then people could really test their assumptions and builds should get better overall.
Instead, there's a lot of closed information that only becomes available to the top agents in the game. I would really liked to have seen TxSteve's Stunners builds just before he reset; as an example. Instead, I'm building a run only team (poorly probably) trying to figure out what works in the running game.
This, so much.
This is a huge problem with this game, everyone is scared that their builds HAVE to be closed otherwise they'll somehow be gameplanned against. Not realizing most all gameplanning comes from watching gamefilm. More so than simply looking at builds ever could. I think seeing a teams heart, toughness, and intimidation would probably be the only useful information, but even then once you see it, it's typically too late to do anything about it. All this really does is keep information out of the hands of other people. The only real way to figure anything out then is with your wallet. That's a pretty big obstacle to new players, and I think its a huge reason why there are so many cookie cutter builds.
We've all brought these terrible ideas with us from GLB1 about what works and what doesn't. Nobody loads up on Heart or Toughness, because Confidence wasn't terribly important in GLB1. Nobody thinks a Power WR can work and break tackles because it's generally accepted that it couldn't on GLB1. People load up on Heart for K's and P's, not realizing it's not as useful in this game as it was to pump confidence on K's and P's in GLB1. And the few who have figured out the differences of this sim from the previous sim typically have their builds closed. Nobody can see what worked and what didn't. I honestly didn't even realize initial attributes could go below 5 until the second season and I only realized that because others had open builds.
Having open builds makes learning more iterative for new users, as without that, all each person has is the money and time they spend expanding their knowledge base. The game will never grow if that's how new players are forced to learn about builds.
