just took my first job as a DC as started setting it up...why in the world do you set the playbooks up for formations, and then the tactics are all about down and distance %s? shouldn't it simply call the plays you set up for the formations given?

Bort didn't like the idea of setting up plays vs formation because it gave a less realistic feel of play calling. Then he got rid of the offense formation depth charts because with them there was really no way of stopping a team that was set up to both run and pass.

tactics are so you can further specify what plays in each formation you call when the offense calls out a certain formation...
For instance, if you know your opponent always passes deep from 5wide on first down... In your 5WR section of the playbook, you have: Dogs all go, Man Base, and Prevent (zone).. Tactics will help you fire the exact play you want on that situation.

As for the man awareness skill, I've been thinking for two seasons now that it literally has nothing to do with how well a player covers a receiver. Its first purpose in life is to make the pass to run check and change from coverage technique to pursuit as your defenders guiding intelligence. After that, the tooltip indicates that it helps with route fake resistance. I'm almost confident that it doesn't do anything for helping a defender actually make a play on a pass. That's 100% cov tech, interception, deflection, and physical skills. I think Man and Zone awareness are basically snap reaction, except for the swap from cov tech to pursuit.
I could have told y'all that
The one thing you're missing on Man/Zone Awareness is QB getting rid of the ball. It doesn't matter how the QB gets rid of the ball, it's a Man/Zone Awareness check.

I'm the DC for the #3 sophomore team. I'm totally running the #6 rookie team. Last season when I DC'd Darkside they had the #1 overall and #1 points allowed defense in their league.
When I tell you blitzing 6 every play is a good way to lose, you maybe might want to listen...
p.s. I'm also very modest in a not at all modest kind of way
