I also thought that quickness was the measure of how fast you attained top speed, not necessarily turning itself, but how fast you accelerated after the turn was complete.

yep... that's posted in many threads.

speed while going into changing directions
speed held through the turn
sharpness of turn at higher speed... and more

I've seen evidence of that but I can't put a number on it.

Its maintaining speed and getting up to top speed as quick as possible. The catch however is that until sprinting is maxed that will always be more valuable in hitting top speed than quickness ever will be and conditioning will always have more value on maintaining speed.

does that mean quickness is kinda a garbage stat before you max sprinting and conditioning?

Not even remotely.

Quickness gets you up to speed and lets you change directions much more quickly. But by itself, it's meh.

Footwork lets you back pedal and sidestep more efficiently. But by itself, it's meh.

Sprinting gives you a higher end top speed. By by iteslf, it's meh.

Conditioning lets you maintain your top speed longer. By by itself, it's meh.

Get it?

Let me put it another way

80 Sprinting and 10 Quickness is stupid. Sure, you're going to have a great top speed except you'll never get there, and worse, whatever it is you're chasing will be long gone, or whatever you're running from will have run you over.

10 Sprinting and 80 Quickness is stupid. Sure, you're at top speed in one step, but you're top speed is roughly the equivalent of a drunken three-toed sloth.

In either case, a guy with a measly 30 Sprinting and 30 Quickness (works out to something like a 5.65-5.7 40 time) would have been much faster over the course of an average play including the turns, starts, stops, and such. Toss decent footwork and conditioning on top of that, and you have yourself a nice foundation for a pass rusher.

No no no. 30 speed and 30 quickness would not reach a destination even remotely as fast as 80/10. Sprinting is everything in terms of getting from point A to point B as quick as possible. Conditioning helps that tremendously in any long run situation. If every play was just about going in a straight line from point A to point B as quick as possible, Quickness would be vastly overrated. Granted it would have its small use for First Step, but still not in the same realm as Sprinting. But since we are playing a game of football and not just track and field, Quickness most certainly has its place, especially defensively.

I wouldn't say it is garbage and you don't need to max out conditioning, but it is definitely a position to position type thing.
