Look, the reason I called my team the Hutu was not to justify their violence upon the Tutsi, but because they are the massive majority (85% or so) tribe in Burundi.

To say that the Burundi massacres were not led by decades of oppression and violence against them is irresponsible.

To act as if they are unimportant because they had good reason is equally irresponsible. You're argument was trying to defend the reasoning behind the massacres, because the massacres themselves cannot be defended. You state that you did not condone the Hutu violence yet you name your team after them...right. And you are condoning peace by siding with the majority over the minority? Ok, that makes sense, why don't you condone peace by siding against the issues that are causing the trouble instead of just picking the majority side. If you were supporting a democratic Burundi then you would recognize the importance of the minority opinion in a democracy. While a democratic society does favor the majority opinion it is also important for the reason that it brings to light the minority opinion as well. But then again I guess you are trying to do your part for minorities by calling us out for being racists. Nice job getting a lot accomplished there.
It still stands that you are the owner of a team who is named after a group responsible for the genocide of a people. Keep it up Herr.

No actually I was talking about the ones pertaining to your boys in Burundi in 1993 where 400,000 Tutsi's were killed.

Felix,

I'm going to be nice and give you a warning. Joebarber went to community college for half a semester, you want NO PART of his intellect.

I am not saying that either side is right or wrong, I was giving a historical account that helps us understand some of the hatred between the Hutu and Tutsi. Nor did I ever say that these acts of genocide from either group was "unimportant".

The issues though connot be easily simplified though. Any issue dealing with ethnicity cannot be easily quelled because of economics or politics. Due to this, the issues at stake are more than redistribution of wealth and free and fair elections. I'm not saying these types of reform wouldn't help, but there must also be a ideological change in the mindset of the people of Burundi. The reason I picked the Hutu is because they are the majority and therefore hold most of the political (voting) power. The ball then is in their court to establish diplomatic relationships with the Tutsi in order to create lasting peace. That is why the majority is important in this situation, they hold the key to give peace a chance by their votes and with their actions. This is not to say that Tutsi actions and voting is not important, but as they are only 15% of the total population, it is the Hutu leadership that must take a stand against the violence.

About the racism bit, how in depth would you like me to get on a message board on a football forum? I never called you a racist, but the name of the team is racist. As for my team, I hope the current stablity between the two ethnic groups remains stable. Though the Hutu and Tutsi must live with what they have done in the past, maybe the violence has shown the need for continual peace. The difference between my team being the Hutu instead of, say, the Nazis is that the genocide of the Nazis was unprovoked. The Hutu, on the other hand, had years of turmoil and pain by the hands of the Tutsi. Considering the civil war, the ethnic hatred involved, and the winners (if there is such a thing in war), my team name is closer to being like naming my team "The United States Union Jacks".

As for the 1993 massacre of Tutsi by Hutu, it was a horrific act of violence that created a civil war. Both sides took heavy casualties and scarred the mental landscape of the country. I just hope today's leaders create lasting democratic peace.

- The north didn't fly the "union jack" in the civil war as it is the flag of the United Kingdom. But if you wanted to take your analogy down that road then we could look at recent events pertaining to the South's use of the "Stars and Bars" on state flags and the problems that have stemmed from it. To think that the Tutsi's do not hold a grudge for these atrocities in the same way would be a bit naive. I would be willing to bet that the Tutsi's would find your team name quite offensive.
- While I agree with you that the genocide by the Nazi's was unprovoked, it is important to realize that from the point of view of the Nazi leadership it was very much provoked, as they blamed the Jewish people for many of the problems in Germany during that time period. We must realize that all genocide's are provoked in the twisted minds of the oppressors otherwise they wouldn't occur.
- Whether there has been historical violence on both sides or not does not justify the genocides on either side. Which makes the overall historical violence completely irrelevant to the fact that you named your team after a group of people most commonly known throughout the world for their atrocities on a minority group.
You're argument is that the violence occurred because of the historical issue's between the two group's so they shouldn't be blamed for doing so. It's not like today they are living together happily, there are still some serious issues over there. Just because they won doesn't mean it's ok to name your team after them.

- So you know I really could care less what you name your team, but by trying to give us crap about our team name you have got to realize it works both ways. If you would like to say that groups would be offended by our team name then I think it is safe to say the Tutsi's would say the same about yours.

I am not going to be around for a few hours so if you post something it will be awhile before I get to it.

Just one thing, while I will agree that to a Tutsi my team name would not be cool.
"Offensive" no.

On a completely separate note:
"Spearchuckers" is completely offensive to all black people in modern society.

Now I'm done with this thread.

You guys seriously need to go away, you both bring this shit up and you have offensive names as well. Cracker Party can be taken just as offensive as Spearchucker if thats the way you want to mean it. Everyone knows what the term CRACKER refers to as well. For the record, my post to you wasn't changing the subject. I was pointing out that you are a dumbass for complaining about a racist name when you are on a team that can be taken the same way.

no, you are ALWAYS changing the subject - that is your strategy.
Everyone knows that "spearchucker" is a derogatory term for people of African descent. None of your acrobatics can change that. It is common knowledge.

"Cracker party" was a political group of WHITE GUYS.

You are wrong, your name is racist, admit it and shut up.
