NightHawks Advance To Conference Semi-Finals Vs. Lumberjacks

Tuscon: You would think the Dallas Strikers would know by now they can't beat the Tuscon NightHawks by throwing the ball all over the field. In an even more dominating performance than the last matchup of these two teams the NightHawks shut out Dallas 23-0 to advance to the Conference Semi's. Their opponent won't be who they thought it would be though. The Austin Lumberjacks shocked everyone by shutting down the Las Vegas Legends. The NightHawks defeated the Lumberjacks 19-6 in the regular season.

Despite the regular season win over the Strikers, Tuscon only went into the game against the Strikers a 3 point favorite. After holding the Dallas Strikers to a season low 142 yards passing Coach p-nutt had nothing but good things to say about his defense. "We put our corner on an island and asked them to make plays and they did all night long. Our linebackers had a huge game coming up with a sack and and several pass knockdowns as well as a slew of tackles. Our Defensive line pushed their way into the backfield all night long, shut down their run again and even had a interception. They could have given up the shutout late but refused to let it happen."

The offense had a very consistent and balanced night as well with 162 yards passing and 144 yards rushing. "We did what we came in here to do," said Blah Dow, "We knew if we could come in and establish our run that their safeties would cheat up. Once they did things opened up over the top."

The NightHawks opened up the scoring on their first possession going 76 yards on 14 plays before stalling on the Strikers 4 yard line. Cantphil Maleg made it a 3-0 Tuscon lead on his first of a 3 for 3 night, hitting from 22 yards out. They held the Strikers scoreless in the first picking off Strikers QB The Duce 2 times.

The score stayed the same till 7:28 left in the second quarter when Maleg again connected, this time from 43 yards away, to make the score 6-0 Nighthawks. On the ensuing kickoff Assh- 0le-Stinky forced a Strikers fumble that was recovered by Mister Shutdown at the Strikers 45 yardline. From there the NightHawks offense put together a methodical drive of 10 plays before capping it off with a touchdown pass from Farve-fan to Kuroki of 5 yards. "I saw how far they were playing off of me at the line of scrimmage and hoped Farve-fan was seeing it too. I just pushed off the line really hard and then just sat down right across the goal line and the pass was perfect for a easy 6." said Kuroki of the touchdown pass.

Leading 13-0 going into the half p-nutt knew that he just had to convince the team to stick with the gamplan. "Everything was working to perfection so their wasn't any reason to start freelancing. We just kept going to every player and telling them to stay with the plan, nobody deviates, stick with the plan."

After a scoreless 3rd quarter left the NightHawks just 15 minutes away from a date with the Conference semi finals, linebacker Old Age said the defense decided that as long as we didn't allow a score it wouldn't matter if the offense put any more points on the board. "You heard it from everyone in the huddle and on the sidelines, shutout, shutout shutout, we'd just made our mind up they weren't scoring."

The offense wasn't taking any chances though adding 10 4th quarter points. After Maleg hit his 3rd field goal of the night, this one from 29 yards, to give Tuscon a 16-0 lead they finally reached the endzone again on a Blake Cooter 3 yard rush giving them the final 23-0 lead.

It was only then that they learned that the Legends had been upset and they would have a surprise opponent in their next game. "I think to a man we all felt the Legends would win that game." Said NightHawks QB Farve-fan, "That just goes to show you how on any given day anyone can go down."

***Stat of the Game***

We could go with.......
Maleg's 43 yarder gave him 5 straight from 40 plus.

Or we could use..........
The 142 yards passing the Strikers were held to

but I think I'll use............
the 1 yard rushing and 3 yards passing average the Strikers were held to.

Busy prepping for next season, We lost to a well coached team, Our OC was on vacation & I handed the Def over to a player & took over the O. I struggled with what I really wanted to do but in the end I decided I'd try to pass more than run. I should have stayed with what got us there instead of trying to be tricky. The worst part of losing that game is that big AU GM I look forward to next season & hope to see you all there.

NightHawks Make Ready For Second Season

Tuscon: They say that athletes improve the most between their first attempt at something and their second. If that is true then things look bright for their 2nd season after going 13-3 and making it to the quarterfinals of BBB 13.

Then again they also have what they call the "Sophomore Jinx". Tuscon will go to extremes to avoid that one including making some pretty significant roster moves this off season.

Gone are late season big play makers but if anything Tuscon appears to have improved itself at key spots. Monster Buzzy Bruizer joins the team at right guard where he will be called on to break open big holes for running backs Blah Dow and Blake Cooter. "One of the reasons I chose Tuscon was because they're a running team and I love to run block."

Another newcomer and offensive line mate of Bruizer was added as this article was being written. Frankie Flash a mammoth offensive tackle will likely be used at Right Tackle to help advance the NightHawk running game. The NightHawks led the league in rushing for much of the year last year till surrendering that honor to the hated Elves, eventual league champions. A renewed focus this year on the run game is likely to see the NightHawks back on top of the rushing heap

The defense is once again loaded by a plethora of playmakers including defensive line stalwarts IB Stuffingholes and Quickly Sacked who are joined this year by Angus "The Axe Murderer" Moses and Reggie White92. The linebacking corp is as deep as any in GLB with the likes of Derrick "Biscuit" Thomas, Bubba McGillicutty, and Nick "Lovin" Hazelett. The secondary is back and intact for the most part with the only newcomer being Nicholas Hazelett at Free Safety.

The conference itself became much more balanced with the removal of the group of cheating GLB mods know as the Silverytown Elves. With them gone any one of 5 or 6 teams could come out on top come seasons end. The NightHawks rank among that group and in the mind of several league officials at the top of it. One source commented "Their defense will be so tough that if their offense gets it's act together they may run away with it." Coach Pontiac doesn't want to listen to it though " Press clippings eventually end up getting recycled. We don't pay attention to that crap we just go about our business of getting ready to play football. We've in no way deluded ourselves into thinking that this league is going to be nothing more than a dog fight from beginning to end"

The players themselves seemed to echo their Coach. "We learned last year that you can't look over the shoulder of the opponent in front of you." said starting QB 1-true Farve-fan, "Allot of us were looking ahead to a conference championship matchup with the Elves and got bushwacked by the Lumberjacks. I can guarantee you won't see any of us team veterans doing it again."

NightHawks Open Seaon With Familiar Result

Tuscon: The largest crowd ever to view a NightHawks home game in newly expanded NightHawks Den saw something they were familiar with last season, another shutout. A swarming defense led the way producing 5 turnovers and continually stuffing the Tallahassee offense holding them to two field goal attempts and an anemic 30 yards rushing.

Offensively the NIghtHawks seemed a bit rusty managing only 76 yards thru the air on 29 attempts. "We struggled a bit in the passing game," said a somewhat dejected 1-True Farve-fan, "I'll take the blame on that. I think I got happy feet out there at times tonight. I was maybe a bit to amped up with it being an opener and things just seemed to sail on me." NightHawks OC Dolhoz thought the Teabaggers defense had allot to do with the passing games struggles. "They showed us allot of different looks out there tonight. Some of them we haven't seen them do on game film."

The rushing game didn't seem to miss a beat once again picking up where they left off last year as one of the best rushing defenses in the league. Grinding out 202 yards they controlled the clock for a good bit of the night. The biggest play of the night also came on the ground as David "The Deuce" Palmer electrified the home crowd when he took a pitch on a 79 yard jaunt that capped the scoring on the game. "The line did a good job of blocking down and the wr threw a great seal block. I knew I could beat the corner but the free safety had a good angle on me. I slowed up and gave him a little shake N bake and it was free sailing from there."

The first half was a defensive struggle that saw a NightHawks field goal as the only score. After Perry Hauge picked off a Rob Toaster pass to set the NightHawks up at the Teabaggers 32 yard line the offense was only able to net 6 yards before Cantphil Maleg opened the scoring with a 44 yard field goal that snuck inside the right upright. The rest of the 1st quarter was a defensive showcase as both defenses forced one three and out after another.

The second quarter was sloppy for both offenses. I B Stuffingholes put an end to one Teabaggers drive with the NightHawks first sack of the year that resulted in a six yard loss. The NightHawks opened the sloppy play when back to back turnovers doomed their next drive. Blake Cooter fumbled on a first down run but fortunately for the Tuscon Frankie Flash was there to cover it up. Three plays later the NightHawks were in scoring position at the Tallahassee 30 yard line when a Farve-fan pass found Kieran Darksun up the right side. Darksun fumbled the ball though after a sharp tackle and this time luck didn't go the NightHawks way as the Teabaggers came away with the ball at their own 26. The Teabaggers were showing signs of life on offense after picking up multiple first downs when on a third and four Toaster was hurried by Quickly Sacked and floated a pass up the left side that was intercepted by Mister Shutdown setting up the NIghtHawks offense at the Teabaggers 33 yardline. Unable to accept the charity Tuscon immediately gave the ball right back to Tallahassee when EYE AM OPEN caught a Farve-fan pass only to fumble it after being hit. Once again the Teabaggers recovered killing yet another potential NightHawks scoring opportunity.

On the NightHawks next drive Farve-fan dropped back to pass on a 1st and 10 at the Tallahassee 32 but was intercepted. "It almost seemed like we didn't want to score in the first half," said Shayde Black, the intended receiver on the Farve-fan interception, "the defense kept putting us in golden scoring opportunities and we kept botching them."

The multiple NightHawks turnovers seemed to swing emotion and put a muzzle on the record crowd. The Teabaggers went on their longest drive of the night before stalling at the Tuscon 28 yard line. A 45 yard field goal attempt by Tallahassee was wide left ending the scoring threat.

The 2nd half opened up with the Teabaggers again going on a long drive, this time reaching the NightHawks 22 yard line. The shutout seemed to be ready to go by the wayside but once again the Tallahassee field goal attempt, this one from 39 yards away, was wide left.

The next time the Teabaggers got the ball back they didn't hold on to it long. IM YOUR DADDY BOY forced a Brandyn Seyler fumble that was recovered by I B Stuffingholes at the NightHawks 45 yard line. The Tuscon offense though continued to struggle and was once again unable to take advantage of the turnover going three and out.

At 6:28 left in the third quarter the Tuscon defense again stepped up. This time Throw Da' Ball Myway intercepted a Toaster pass returning it to the Teabaggers 28. The offense this time relied on the rush to grind their way down inside the 10 before stalling. Cantphil Maleg made it a 6-0 ball game with a 25 yard field goal.

The defense wasn't done being charitable to it's struggling offense though. With 10:32 left in the fourth quarter Burton Scott stepped in front of another Toaster pass and returned it 16 yards to the Teabaggers 34 yard line. Mixing the pass and the run the NightHawks offense was finally able to put it all together when it hit paydirt on a 13 yard touchdown pass from Farve-fan to Braden giving Tuscon a 13 point lead.

The Teabaggers again put together a impressive drive moving the ball from their own 41 to the NightHawks 19 yard line. Facing a 4th and almost 10 the Teabaggers elected to forgo the field goal attempt instead going for the first down in an ill advised attempt to keep the drive alive. On the play Toaster was hurried by I B Stuffingholes and had his pass knocked down by Cro Marty ending the Tallahassee scoring threat.

Two plays later Palmer broke his long run, and the Teabaggers back, ending the scoring on the night. A last ditch effort to end the NightHawks shutout attempt was thwarted when a Toaster to Chimney pass was incomplete at the Tuscon 26 yard line forcing a turnover on downs.

"I thought the defense played lights out," said Coach Pontiac in the post game press conference, "They gave up some yards but the game plan was more of a "bend but don't break" type plan. We felt that as long as we held them to field goal attempts we would win the game. They missed a couple of tries and a couple came so late in the game they felt like they had to go for it. To our guys credit we came up with the stops when we had to."

New linebacker The Jaegernautt was pumped after the game, having a hard time sitting still while being interviewed at his locker. "We pretty much did what we wanted to out there tonight. There will be allot of offensive coordinators in the league picking up their sports pages in the morning and shaking their heads at the thought of having to go up against this defense."

****Stat of the Game****

We could go with ............
Palmer's 40.3 yards rushing average per carry

or we could use....................
the 24 pancake blocks the NightHawks offensive line feasted on.

but I think I'll go with..........
9 tackles by Sex Tornado to go along with his 1 hurry and 2 passes defended.

Next up is the Las Vegas Legends a team that gave the NightHawks fits in their regular season matchup last year.

Atleast it is well written and such. I'm pretty sure that their team reporter does like business for a living, for it is written quite professionally. Even if he doesn't, he's having fun doing it now. And to add to that, he's continuing to do it despite obnoxious and unnecessary comments. I'm pretty sure he doesn't criticize your hobbies or way of life, and don't believe it's right to critcize his.

Keep it up!

I have to admire the owner for his commitment. Even with all of the obnoxious post he just ignored it like it was nothing and continued to do what he enjoyed. I wish he was able to do this for my team.

NightHawks Fall Short Against Legends

Tuscon: Last year the NightHawks opened their expansion season with a shutout and then followed that up with a flat effort to suffer their first loss. Following that same script Tuscon followed an opening shutout win with a lackadaisical effort against the Las Vegas Legends resulting in a 15-9 loss. As Yogi Berra was known to say "It's like Deja Vu all over again."

The atmosphere in the locker room following the loss was somber to say the least. "We pissed that one away" said fullback Amos Moses dejectedly, "No way we should have lost that game. We're just flat out a better team than them." Moses point blank statement was echoed throughout the locker room and in the post game press conference. "I'm kind of at a loss as to what just happened out there on the field. I really felt like right up till the end that we'd find a way to win the game. The defense played hard and gave us a chance to win it but we just couldn't get things lit on offense," said Coach Pontiac. When asked what he saw on the field that surprised him he would only say, "We really felt like we'd wear them down with our run as time went on, but it just never seemed to happen."

The Legends defensive collapse never happened meanwhile their offense managed 5 field goals thanks in part to opportunistic defense and special teams play. The game had been a defensive battle up until 8:31 left in the first quarter. Facing a 4th and 2 the Legends punted to Tuscon's David Palmer who took the ball in at the NightHawks 15 yard line and raced towards the home sideline. He had reached the 28 yard line when he was struck by a Legends defender knocking the ball loose and Palmer to the ground with the Legends recovering the ball at the NightHawks 28. Unable to gain even a yard the Legends were forced to attempt a 45 yard field goal which was good giving the Las Vegas an early 3-0 lead.

After the NightHawks again went 3 and out the Legends offense drove the ball from their own 47 down to the Tuscon 18. Twice the NightHawks defense forced 3rd and longs but both times the Legends converted. They brought in their kicking unit which was successful from 35 yards out to take a 6-0 lead.

Las Vegas took a 9-0 lead on their next possession after a shanked NightHawks punt was returned to their 37 yard line. The Legends offense was able to move the ball 13 yards before stalling and once again bringing in their kicking unit which was good again from 42 yards out.

"Even after they got up two scores we didn't feel like we were out of the game," said NightHawks receiver Shayde Black, "but it just seemed like everybody was waiting on somebody else to make it happen." What happened instead was the Legends taking a 12-0 lead after picking off Tuscon quarterback 1-True Farve-fan and taking possession of the ball at the NightHawks 38 yard line. Las Vegas came up empty on picking up a first down by a half yard thanks in part to I B Stuffingholes hurrying the Vegas quarterback into a incompletion on 3rd and half a yard to go. Vegas instead had to settle for a 45 yard field goal.

That "something" that Black referred to happened 2 Legend possessions later when Mr. Shutdown stepped in front of a Las Vegas pass and returned it 52 yards for the score. Indicative of how the NightHawks night was going though they missed the exra point leaving it a 6 point game.

The score stayed the same through the half and over the first several possessions going into the 3rd quarter when the NightHawks offense finally showed signs of life. Moving the ball from their own 42 down to inches short of the goal line. Coaches then made the controversial call of settling for a field goal to make the score 12-9. "We felt like the way the offense had struggled if we went for it and didn't make it that it might be more than they could handle and it got us within one score of tying things up"

The final score of the game was of course yet another field goal. The Legends drove 32 yards on their final scoring drive before stalling at the NightHawks 25 yard line. Tuscon nearly got the ball back on the drive when Angus Moses forced a fumble on the Legends lone rush of the drive. Unfortunately for the NightHawks, Las Vegas recovered and went on to kick a 42 yard field goal that ended up being the difference in the game.

Despite the ineptitude of their offense and all the mistakes they'd made on the field to that point the NightHawks actually had two chances to win the game. The first came as a result of yet another NightHawks punt, 1 of 12 by Tuscon on the Night, when Devin Hester was hit by Im Your Daddy Boy that forced a fumble which was recovered by Katt "Stupidfingers" Black. The NightHawks were unable to move the ball and were forced to once again punt the ball away. The NightHawks defense stepped up and made a play to give the offense 1 last chance. Las Vegas attempted to run a sweep but Tuson corner Cro Marty tackled him knocking the ball loose where it was recovered by Quickly Sacked at the Legends 25 yard line. With just under 2 minutes left in the game the NightHawks had a perfect chance to score the winning touchdown. Instead 1-True Farve-fan threw four straight incompletions ending the NightHawks bid at an undefeated season.

"We've got to put this behind us," said Pontiac "We can dwell on what might have been or we can learn from it and get ready to face our next oppponent." OC Dolhoz didn't seem to have any answers either. "Till we have a chance to look at the film and break it down I can't tell you exactly what went wrong."

One things for sure, when he does look at it, he won't like what he sees.
