Are pinstripes too relaxed? I'm interviewing for a couple research jobs with different professors at 2 universities here and if nothing happens there, I'm interviewing to be a lab tech in a hospital. The hospital one is a 50-60K per year position to start, if pay has any effect on dress.

i haven't been to a job interview in 18 yrs though, so what do i know.

i do a lot of hiring, but the jobs i hire for don't require an applicant to wear a suit

Headed out to buy my first full suit soon, had been buying separates here and there until now. Couple questions before I leave- What is an acceptable interview suit? Im guessing dark grey, yes/no on pinstripes? I have a couple formal suits, one for funerals, and a sport coat that I never actually wear but no non-black suits.

Definitely do not wear pinstripes.

If you do not have many suits, get the plainest ones you can find in the most conservative colors, like navy, charcoal, medium gray, etc. Nothing looks more ridiculous than when you see someone in a suit multiple times, it is always the same one and you remember it because it is unusual.

Saw it a lot with newer or not so successful real estate agents. Their three appointments a month were always in the same couple suits, and they were a patterned mess that everyone remembers or they had the "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" Regis Philbin thing going on. If they had a classic suit, a white shirt, and a few muted ties, it would not have been noticeable.

Imagine what the guy interviewing you is gonna be wearing, and then mimic that. If it is a research job, I would not recommend showing up looking like P Diddy.

Didn't end up buying anything because the sales guy was kind of a dick and got all pushy like I was supposed to come in there with a stack of cash and an exact number with measurements, like it's appalling that I expected him to have some sort of knowledge about suits.

With the above advice, I'm probably going dark charcoal since I'm not a huge navy fan.

This is the new norm, people that can do a job well enough without having to be paid enough to be knowledgeable.

I'd be tempted to say that for an academic research position, this might apply.

I would take the more classic fit. Just as an idea, JC Penny carries suits. If you buy one from them, they will give you a receipt that includes the return value. They kind of expect people to use it as a suit rental place. (they return price is exactly what you paid, so it's more like borrowing)

Corduroy jacket with suede elbow patches. They may be confused as to who is the interviewee when he shows up.
