depends on the type of icy road. if you're talking full on ice covered, then no, it really doesn't. if you're talking patches in which one tire might be on ice and one tire in pavement, then sure, but how often is that the case?

The only time it doesn't help is on zero traction ice, which is very rare. Especially four tires worth of it.

not really. a full on road of black ice is quite common here in the winter.

Pertaining to me, cost isn't a massive issue. I can afford up to $15K with 6K down. Keeping my payment under 200 a month is the goal, and I wouldn't be stretching the budget till closer to 350.

AWD is a necessity unless it's an SUV.

In our region ice is more common than snow.

cost is an issue in that you could get a higher quality front wheel drive vehicle for the same amount of money as an all wheel drive vehicle. but hey, if awd is some sort of perceived necessity, knock your socks off and spend the extra bucks.

Yeah, I always see a LOT of RWD pickups shown in the ditches whenever they're covering bad roads/ice in this area.

my Colorado is RWD, but it at least has traction control, so as soon as it starts to slip it kills the power

i love turning it off and tearing up a frozen parking lot though

I must admit, I've done that with my truck too, it's an older vehicle so it doesn't have traction control.

I can see why, that GMC Sierra of mine is easily the worst car I've ever driven in snow. I feel like I'm about to go into a ditch every time I take a corner in the snow. My back is packed up with tools, as well so it's not even as bad as it could be.

about 5 years ago, I'm driving my 4wd dakota to work when I hit a patch of black ice (clear cold winter morning) at the same exact time that it downshifts up a hill. ass end completely kicked out and before I could shit myself I'm heading for the ditch in the other lane. nice fluffy snowbank which I got buried in enough to need a tow out of, 4 low wouldn't even crawl me out. but shit, if there had been a plow coming the other way, I'd have been creamed

2012 Jeep Patriot. 4x4, surprisingly good mileage at 22/28, on the small side of SUVs, 49K miles, factory warranty goes 5 years 36,000.

2012 Chevy Captiva (fleet only) 49K miles, FWD, 20/26, warranty to 5 years 100,000.

Any thoughts on either vehicle?

Also, every goddamn Forester gets sold within an hour of the listing going up I swear to Christ
