If we're intelligent about it and make say... anti-monopoly laws or something. If only someone had the foresight to think of that

All mental health meds are a crap shoot. You can pretty accurately tell how a person's cholesterol and blood pressure will be affected by certain drugs but the psyche is nowhere near as certain. I've seen patients with 7-8 anxiety, stabilizer, and anti-depressant medications before they find the combo that works for them

IF they find that combo.

Mental health community needs a huge restructure imo.

Well, people did.

Then the people that wanted a monopoly paid the people to change their mind.

At least twice a week I'll find a doctor at the desk on the phone with the pharmacist asking him which drug to prescribe at what dose and how often. They're the ones generally calling the nurses' station telling us we have to call the doctor to clarify this, or whatever because doctors are more or less incompetent when it comes to the clerical side of hospital protocols and care.

As for the actual job description... I'll defer to the above post.

Edit, by above I mean ram's post. Not whatever else is between here and there.

yeah, as his post went into, I was definitely asking more about a retail pharmacist, and my general impression was much as he described, that it's mostly clerical now. what you're describing sounds more like the pharmacy role in a hospital. My dad was recently in for an 18 day hospital stay, and I could see the pharmacy playing a MUCH larger role there than what I observe of the retail guys.

Sucks to hear man. Hope he's doing alright.

It doesn't really surprise me. I'm guessing a retail pharmacy has the same relationship as a hospital pharmacy as a doctor's office has with a real hospital. Infinitely more versed at understanding/advising in insurance matters, while being ill-suited for treating emergency situations.

thanks. yeah, he's good now. he had been on an arthritis drug which lowers the immune system (Humira, I think), which then basically paved the way to bacterial pneumonia and then eventually septic shock. got to the point where his liver and kidneys started to shut down, and pretty much full respiratory failure. so they konked him out for a few days to let the respirator breathe for him while shotgunning antibiotics into his system in the hopes of killing the bug which started it all. took a while to get his strength back, but is back to 100% now.

In 3 weeks?

Had a touch of that because of my appendix bursting... took me much longer to get back to fighting weight. SethDad99 is a bamf.

Yeah we're pretty much not equipped for emergencies at all. We have 2 epi-pens on hand that are never to be dispensed, only to be used in case of emergency, and basic first aid supplies, but that's literally it.

I'm saying that if the whole thing was designed with service and keeping people healthy in mind, rather than turning a profit, then none of that would even be an option

I'm not shitting on your job or your ability to count pills.

Who does that? Who builds *anything* because "golly, this will help people"? My girlfriend is always babbling out about "helping lost kittens and cats and puppies and dogs" and I always tell her "As soon as you can tell me how its going to CASH FLOW I'll help you build it".

I'm pointing out that your focus on "profit" is misguided.
