If I'd stayed I would still be commuting over an hour to work for around minimum wage, maybe slightly higher if I stuck to it for several years.

It's a shithole that hasn't recovered from the recession in 2008. Or the recession before that. Or the one before that. It's still trying to recover from the Great Depression. It was a boom town in the 1920's, until the coal mines dried up and/or switched to more automation. Now it's a pit of despair sustained by welfare checks and meth.

Ive lived in Ohio for about 6years now. Started out in north eastern Ohio in a small town 30 min from Canton called Alliance. Where I'm at now is just outside Dayton which is supposedly the Heroin and pain pill OD capitol. Cincinnati is 45min south, and Columbus is an hour and a half north. I think it was overtaken recently by somewhere else in the country but its pretty bad....Sadly this is a common problem everywhere now.

Honestly, it makes sense. It's the area of the country most passionate about football.

My home town, the "main stretch" is about 12 abandoned buildings. They keep collapsing, but the city is too afraid to clean it up because it might cause the adjacent buildings to collapse. The schoolbooks in the school are so old that my 15 year old sister literally has books from when my dad was in school. They run fundraisers to pay for grass seed for the baseball field...and fail to raise the funds.

High school football, though? They just built a million dollar football stadium. Hell, the home section of the stadium holds over three times as many people as live in the town...and it sells out every Friday night. New, fancy football stadium surrounded by collapsing buildings, barren fields, and forest overgrowth. Meth den right outside the fence.

The county south of us is Meriwether County, but all the residents (and law enforcement) call it Methwether County. It really is an all-over problem.

I’m originally from the Massillon/Canton area. Football is like a religion there. I mean Massillon is the top high school football program of all time and it’s not a huge city by any means.

It's crazy how extremely opposite Massachusetts is(not in a good way). There was a bill gaining traction to ban tackle football in the state until after 7th grade. The state determining whether or not your child can participate in a sport is bonkers to me. Luckily, sensible parents rose up and squashed it. That's one positive about my area. Most people are pretty sensible.

As far as the rampant drug use in our country goes, I think it's a product of a toxic environment/lack of culture. I was on that hamster wheel for a while. I've been opiate free for 6+ years now. When there's no purpose or obvious meaning in your life, and the system seems rigged, hollow vices are an effective quick fix. Unfortunately, the long term side effects are horrible.

But I digress... I appreciate the perspective. Glad you shared your experience with your shithole backwoods town.

Haha I coached at Manchester for a while and my ex wife is from Meriwether. I can vouch for this.
