Seems ridiculous to me to judge the "highest point of the game" by the number of rookie / journeyman teams where the game is absolutely in it's worst state gameplay/tactics wise (in terms of build variety due to SP limitations) and it's unlikely half of those teams will make it past seasoned if that. Journeyman in this case is just a cherrypicked tier to say "Hey, we're doing alright! Look at all these middle-of-the-road teams!"
By that logic you might as well say Season 2 was the best season because Sophmore was superstar-free and highly competitive, and rookie only had 3-4 superstars (people who discovered how to abuse getting SS in one season) which shook the game up quite a bit and Engage with Zorp became the first really abusive "how do we stop these guys?!?!" team in the game just to lose in the championship to everybodies excitement/suspense.
And if you go by board activity it seems pretty obvious people care a lot less now than they did a couple seasons ago. Now the main board is just perpetually bumped tier threads with the same 4-5 owners in that tier jerking themselves off after every ladder game.
