Correct...if the defender is coming from a far distance. But most of the time, the defender in underneath coverage will be a couple of yards away from the catch, so he will use footwork and quickness to get to the WR.

While speed is surely needed, inside of the zone area that a player is assigned he is not going to get up to any crazy speed in time and instead will need higher quickness/footwork to close smaller gaps between the defender and ball catcher/carrier quickly.

Correct again. My underneath pass coverage guys all will have 45 verticle, plus gold EOTP (+15 to vert), giving them 60 verticle on most plays. They will also have 30 diving for KL...plus max power tackling.

My sateties will invest in diving for shoe string tackles and KL.

Zone is intriguing as hell. I feel like you could literally build every non-DL defender the same way. Tons of speed, power tackling, strip tech, zone cov awr, pursuit and intercepting. Toss in some diving & vert for a bit more range.

so everything except Man Awareness?

oh but then you can't run any man play in the book because everyone is garbage at covering.

This could be interesting...

Right now I am building this way a little to make better use of the Lurk plays.

i honestly believe that if mastered zone could be a very underrated defense...just nneed the right mix of plays and builds

I actually kind of agree with GE here (bullet is in the chamber... Talk me down man!). While speed is surely needed, inside of the zone area that a player is assigned he is not going to get up to any crazy speed in time and instead will need higher quickness/footwork to close smaller gaps between the defender and ball catcher/carrier quickly. Speed on safeties make sense as they are a catch all and will often be pursuing ball carriers from farther away. I do think that a good amount of vertical would be needed for those underneath coverages. I often see defenders jumping but may not be jumping high enough or just suck at PD rolls. I don't know. Players should probably still all be 65-75 speed though for getting to their zone quickly and pursuing ball carriers that are outside of their zones.

You aren't gonna close any gaps with 65-75 speed. That is why zone is terrible. They need speed/quickness (maybe even awareness) bonus's for closing in on the ball when it is in the air at the very least. Probably even prior to that.

i think of zone as as long as we are by the ball we give the best hit in their mouth and let the morale take the game over from there

It can force a ton of turnovers, even playing down a tier last season I finished with 18 more forced turnovers than the next closest Journeyman team and tied for 5th in all of GLB.

As discussed it takes a crazy amount of skills to possibly do that it seems. Even with a studded S* defensive roster it may not work (good luck recruiting anyway). Zone will always give up a good amount of yards and if that is the case then defenders probably need to focus on being a turnover machine and get INTs/FFs like crazy. With the pressing need for high quickness/footwork along with the always needed tackling skills then high verticals and decent speed it just does not seem possible. Maybe a Early Bloomed defense but even then building players to have even decent caps across the board may be a pain.

Wasn't there something about Zone Shark being bugged and the defense not getting the morale boost?
