They don't really have more points early. they just start at the top of the list. If Alabama starts ranked #1, and they lose their first game of the season, they wouldn't be ranked #1 anymore.
Under the previous elo system, if Madison lost their first game, they'd still be ranked #1.
The system we have this season with the elo tier reset is much more closely aligned with how college football works on rankings than the previous system.
