We must be right on the edge.
We'll get there soon enough. I said earlier in the season it'd be a late surge, and thats exactly what we're doing.

Tied for 21st with a 17.3 rating.

This game sucks! I stopped running the ball in the 2nd half. I was running right up the gut all first half and you couldn't stop me. Then I get behind and I start passing. Not only that, I put my best WR S* in the slot on 3 WR sets and you freaking triple teamed him. He got one throw all game long. Last game you played, the slot was wide open all day.

I don't how many damn 3rd downs you got...that is what really pissed me off. I held you to 3rd down almost every time and sure enough, your QB and WR would pull some crazy "on the run" pass and diving catch...

AGGG!!!!

So for the fact of entertainment for myself and you I will breakdown your response with mine. Since this was your largest loss in league/ladder play.

You sir broke your tendency of outside rush which I keyed on defending and left my inside weak, to which you took good advantage of, smart move. But the issue you had was in your AI you either had Trailing Big too close of a gap to switch to your weakness which is passing. Clearly your strength is running, but you went to passing too fast.

You pass very predictably, in your AI which allowed me to key heavily on pass defense which allowed me to only have 3 on the line with all others in coverage. I didn't change anything offensively as that is my strength, so I adjusted my defense to your tendencies and that is why you got me on the run, but on the pass you didn't change it up.

So I did some research, and out of 74 passing plays, 37 times on 1st down 23 times on 2nd down 14 times on 3rd down. So that is a 37.8% rate of which you held me to 3rd down. What this means is that on any given drive I had a 61.2% chance of getting a first down before 3rd down even came up. Now that those odds and consider that you got torched with under routes most of the game, so any 3rd and short got you. I was 85% passing on 3rd down. 70% on 2nd down. 70% on 1st down. What this tells me are 2 things, one you might run a different defense that tailored poorly against my passing sets on 3rd down, and I had shorter distances on 3rd down to increase my range of targets to go to. There actually were some instances on 3rd down where I threw at the first down line just short so essentially despite my 3rd down % I didn't convert all to 1st down.

It is well documented that zone is weak against the pass fundamentally, hard to argue with results on that. The thing that hurt you this game was you made a drastic gameplan change with your running game and didn't stay committed to it long enough, in addition you were predictable in the passing game with honestly less than desirable passing plays in its core.

Something else to think about, you only ran 4 WR all game, to which 4, 22, 55, 60 were the plays ran by each WR, if I were to guess that you put your S* as the 55 or 60 but in reality he only ran 22 plays all game. Of which only 20 were passing plays. You have a depth chart problem or a conditioning issue for him to have so little plays. Remember to play with your strengths.

For the guys on the test servers, is zone just completely broken...or do some builds sort of make it work? Or would you need basically an entire defense of S* players to do alright?

That win should have us (LV Vipers) in your next set of rankings.

Good post. My S* WR only played limited snaps because he was only playing in the slot, 3 WR sets.

It sure seemed like I held you to more 3rd downs...maybe it was my imagination.

I'm not quite where I need to be yet defensively. I will be in about another season when my "fast, blitzing" CBs have about 80 sprinting and will be coming off the edge to pressure the QB.

Oh...and "Big Lead" must be broken because I have it set for 24 points. I shouldn't have abandoned the inside run when down only 15 points. Yet it seems I passed often at that point.

There's no such thing as a CB pressuring a QB. They can be used to force interesting problems in run defense, but any modestly aware QB build suffers no ill from a blitzing CB. Especially when all the WRs are running wide-ass open against Zone defenders sitting on thier asses.

Looks like this CB gets pressure to me. He only has 57 speed right now, but he is gonna max out at 93 speed. When he does, he will get to the QB in a split second. If he doesn't get the sack, he will get pressure.

I see no "hurry" in that description. The QB threw that pass at that moment because his WR was WAO, not because the CB appeared to be bearing down.

Your increased speed at CB will be matched by the increased speed at WR getting to the same point in the route sooner, and the QB's increased awareness allowing him to spot the WR sooner.

Don't count on Logzilla suddenly deciding to stop improving their QB, O-line, or WRs.

Your enthusiasm for zones is fun and all, and you can certainly build an effective run defense with them since there's decent enough plays to be found for that. But you're never going to hold a real passing attack below 65% completions on a "good" day. And you're probably going to suffer some 80% completions type days down the road.
