Currently the only way to attack the passing game is to go all in and go as hard as you can to the QB. What's even sillier about that game is there were FOUR SACKS out of 150ish pass plays. Both of us blitzed nearly every play. Damned if you do, Damned if you don't. And i'm off to be an OC that runs 4 plays all game and wins. GG.
I'm almost positive that QB's get an extra roll just before they get sacked. You see entirely too many QB's throwing balls not when a receiver comes open, but when a defender is about to get them. What's more, the same thing happens against non-superstar rookie QB's. Passes come out when the QB is pressured, not when WR's are open.
On top of that, hurried doesn't seem to have any real effect on completions. My defense hurried Cleveland 14 times, Air Raid caught 10 of them which is a 71.4% completion rate, much higher than his overall rate.
As an aside, my entire reasoning for blitzing almost every down wasn't to get sacks. It was to get Cleveland to throw the ball before his speedy WR's outran my coverage. I do the same thing with my rookie zone defense except there I truly, truly don't expect my DB's to actually do anything in coverage.
