For the record, Catholic clergy are LESS likely to be molestors per capita than the average citizen.

Thats the statistical facts, Jack.

Prod media likes to hype it up, and its all bad of course. But the LOL about priests and this stuff is just that - LOL.

the problem is, for some reason Catholic clergy are held to a higher standard than your typical scumbag felon. wouldn't know why.

You average citizen also isn't part of an institution that protects them by suppressing reports of molestation.

I'm catholic, and to be honest, I could care less what the statistical situation is.

The bottom line is that the average citizen isn't brought up to view clergyman in awe. Likewise, the average citizen isn't raised to trust that above all else, the clergy are the morally righteous in our lives, leading us through life via the moral teachings of Jesus Christ.

Needless to say, I haven't been to church in years. This problem, amongst other things, makes the Catholic church, in my eyes, one of the most morally reprehensible institutions in the world.

How about Protestant Clergy? Rabbis? High School Teachers? They do it in statistically the same or higher levels, yet its not the lead story at ABC for weeks the way it is anytime a Priest gets named as a suspect.

LOL at the notion its about a higher standard.

Its about protestant bigotry, which runs rampant in this country. 500 year old propaganda from the Reformation Wars rehashed in childhood rearings over generations, freshened with anti Papist anti Immigrant bigotry from the Irish, Italian and Polish immigrations in the 1800s and early 1900s. Mexicans are feeling alot of that as well.

If you think its anything else, you are kidding yourself.

Sure it would, thats what the media is selling to you.

But my point is that this is NOT a church problem alone. Its a societal problem. But that doesn't play to the news editors' (and their audience's) bigotrys, so it doesn't get the same play.

I mean, yeah the stuff that happened is not good. But the morons that hype this stuff would have you believe every Priest is a boy loving rapist, and the many morons who listen to them buy right into that - per the idiotic Hate post I responded to and which had two quick agreeing posts.

Oh really? Lets examine that sht.

You think no one in the families of these people heard rumors about the Cousin who bounced the kids on his lap a little too enthusiastically? No one warned the girls in a family to not get near Uncle Joey or be alone with him because he might grab their azz? No one ever shrugged and walked away from suspicions like that? Yes, of course they do. But ABC doesn't roast them in th evening news, does it?

You do not think anyone ever laughed off some teacher dating his students back in the 50s and 60s and 70s when these Priest situations were taking place? I know full well they did, saw it in my own school. Hell one of the teachers married one of his students right after she graduated - he was still working there for years after wards. Funny how that never made ABC's coverage.

And how exactly is it the church's responsibility to investigate crimes? Do you think your employer should investigate any rumors about your illegal activities? They would not, not unless they thought you were stealing from THEM. Certainly not 30 years ago.

And, this is key - you have to understand the context and the times that these events were taking place in. This is long before society or science understood that these people were uncurable psychopaths. This is when they sent these people to jail and then let them out without strings, thinking that they would be dissuaded by their prison sentence from misbehaving. And the context is the Catholic Church, an institution of forgiveness by its very nature. So if you have a priest who you think may be doing something wrong, you tell him to knock it off and you move him away from his temptations to start afresh. Thats consistent with the notion of forgiveness and the sensibilities of the time.

If they were doing that today. yeah, that would be pretty dumb. But back then, any one who is blaming them as being evil for doing it is either an idiot or a bigot.

Ya - everyone can make fun of my church... Oh wait... I'm Wiccan - I don't have a church...

And Church is a grouping of people, not a fucking building...

I hate when people say we are going to church.. Say you are going to Mass, for fucks sake...

(And my inlaws are Mormon, and they try to convert me AT least once a day... I just walk away from them)

Either way, the problem with all religions is the fact that everyone steadfastly holds on to their morals and values that they are taught, like they are a lifeline, instead of a guideline...

Learn to be tolerant, Learn to accept other people's point of view, and Learn to laugh at a funny joke...

Besides - My kicker's name is God __ - if that offends you yello1, I will tell you the same thing I tell everyone else... Don't look at it...

Since I do not scout worth a hoot, no worries there.

And yes, tolerance is key. In my view of the world, God is highly unlikely to have given the word just to one tribe or just at one time, but rather doled it out to the scattered tribes as their circumstance and need and level of understanding required. This makes sense, jives internally with most religions having more than one prophet at one time, (Moses-Jesus etc) and the multitude of disparate and yet largely similar faiths.

In that light, I find it silly to throw stones, because who the hell am I to say or know which of the throng has some kernel of truth to them and which are utterly full of crap. Barring clear moonbattery by a known cult psycho of course (ie Waco, Scientology, ShamWow).

Your right on both accounts sir. However, not everyone is like that. I didn't join the Church (Catholic) until I was 32 (I'm now 41) and it has helped me through some tough times. It helped me get a grasp on things that were important.

Your use of "everyone" though is obviously an exaggeration (prolly intentional). Just stating that were not all like that.
