Standings so far (record, and record of teams they've beaten as a tie-break, etc):
1. Amsterdam
2. Konoha
3. Quebec
4. Antwerp
5. Hamburg
6. Cardiff
7. Newcastle
8. Vienna
9. Athens
Barring a big upset, Amsterdam should go rolling into the matchup vs. Quebec with a 7-0 record; after a tough schedule the first 4 games, their next 4 opponents are 1-3, 0-4, and 1-3 respectively.
Konoha has a tough 3-game stretch coming up. They face teams that are 3-1, 2-2, and 3-1.
Quebec has the most lopsided schedule in the conference. They only play 1 team above .500 before week 8, and only one team below .500 from then on. The matchup with Newcastle (3-1) next week is interesting, but see the note on the Nightmare below. We're looking at game 8 as the earliest that the top spot in the league is determined.
Antwerp is an interesting case.. They are 3-1, but their only loss is to Amsterdam and they're the only team to play a somewhat competitive game against the Smugglers. Even then-undefeated Cardiff was dismantled 41-0 by the Dutch side. Antwerp's beaten some good teams. They _could_ be as good as the second best team in the conference.
Hamburg and Cardiff square off next week; both are 3-1 teams with their only loss against a quality team. Hamburg's beaten slightly better opponents, Cardiff's loss was to a tougher team. They seem pretty even so far, so next week will sort that out.
Newcastle is 3-1, but the teams they've beat are a combined 1-11. More data is needed to figure out how good they are. They did play Konoha somewhat close--but so did Dresden.
GAME OF THE WEEK, week 5:
Konoha (4-0) vs. Antwerp (3-1). As discussed, Antwerp is the best 3-1 team in the league. A huge victory by the Hokages could put them in the discussion with Amsterdam for best team. A victory by Antwerp and you have to start thinking seriously about whether they're the 2nd best team in the conference.
Undercard: Cardiff (3-1) vs. Hamburg (3-1) in what appears to be a closely matched fight to determine which of these (if either) may turn out to be one of the conference's elite teams.
