Highly touted Shrooms? Where did you see this? I must have missed something because we havent been high in the rankings.

What is your idea of high? Always higher than us.

I didn't say you were one of the top dogs in the league. Just highly touted. All relative....splitting hairs though in this conversation.

Zeta Conference Power Rankings - Week 3

THE DEFENDER

1. Melbourne Thorny Devils - The best passing offense and the third best running offense combined with the best defense and big blow out wins means another week at the top for Melbourne. They continue to face top competition this week in the NMI Ramekins.

THE CONTENDERS

2. Tonga Thunderbirds - A big win puts them back in the #2 spot, largely on the strength of the conference's best rushing roster.

3. El Fuego - Another week, another big win. This has the fires riding a little higher in the power rankings than their 7th ranked roster may be able to support long term.

4. NMI Ramekins - They'll have their hands full this week. They should have enough offense to score the first points of the season on the Thorny Devils, but can they stop the relentless Melbourne attack?

5. Bikini Atoll Mushroom Clouds - After processing the week 2 roster changes, it turns out last week's Shrooms-Bandits game was actually between the fifth and sixth best rosters in the league, so even if the win was smaller than they were probably expecting, it was still a quality victory.

6. Dunedin Wolverines - Nothing like a 21-point win to stop your slide in the power rankings. Dunedin still has one of the top 3 offensive rosters in the conference.

7. The Four Horsemen - Well, if they didn't like my #4 ranking last week, this one'll sting. Not as bad as that shutout loss to Melbourne, though. They've got the weakest passing roster of the contenders and it cost them in this one.

IT WAS JUST A FENDER-BENDER

8. Coney Island Warriors - A wrathful Tonga was not kind to them this week. They shouldn't be too down, though: There's only two teams in the conference with that level of defense, and if they see Tonga again, it'll be in the playoffs.

9. Chinese Bandits - Their big recruiting drive paid off in the roster score, but will it be enough to let them hang with Dunedin. They need a win in a big way.

10. Christchurch Knightmares - Important week for the Knightmares, as they face Coney Island, a team they stack up well with. Will the Warrior's rushing attack prove to be too much for the Knightmares? Stay tuned to find out!

NEED TO BECOME BIG SPENDERS

11. Redscape Diplomats - The season was always going to be a bit tough for them, but now that they've dropped two to teams close to them in the power rankings, Redscape had better be working on a plan B. Week 4 in Cimmeria suggests their losing streak will end, but a tough middle of the schedule after that could leave them vulnerable to the black hole of low morale.

12. Tasmania Sand Gnats - A soft middle schedule may be enough to get them back into it, but they need more talent to capitalize, especially in the area of pass defense.

13. Uluru Rockies - They need more power for their roster. The good news is they have Cimmeria this week, which should be plenty winnable. It's a little easier to recruit FA when you have a 2-1 record.

14. Mauna Kea Chenabogs - With games against the Shrooms, Coney Island and Tonga coming up, they better be recruiting now. The more the losses pile up, the harder it will be to land talent.

15. Cimmerian Barbarians - The only question here was to put them in this section or the last one. Since they're coming off what is likely to be their only win of the season (absent major roster moves), I'm being a bit generous.

RETURN TO SENDER

16. FPQA Ronnie Rockers - Well, it looks like they won't be held scoreless all season - they did manage a field goal in Cimmeria.

Wow! Just WOW!
I knew Tonga was full of themselves but....

How can you have the team that was #2 and didnt lose fall to 4th?

How is it the have the best conference rushing roster when they only have 1 RB on the top 10 rushing list when many have 2? And hes 4th on the list. And as a team your 4th in rushing yards.

And the bigger question how can you have the team that beat yours and is undefeated 5th?

Is Tonga going to be in first next week?

To be clear, these rankings are conducted based on a formula and a score, not subjectively looking at this-team-beat-that-team. In the end, head-to-head analysis never works because you end up with loops. A beat B who beat C. In the NFL, should the 1-15 Dolphins ranked higher than the 5-11 Ravens, who they beat?

Margin of victory and strength of opponent ARE factors in the formula. Stats will not be until week 4, because individual games (Cimmeria-FPQA, anyone?) throw them out of whack. Feel free to do the roster analysis yourself, the numbers don't lie, nor are they subjective. Melbourne outlevels everyone, but Tonga outlevels everyone except Melbourne.

Also unlike in the NFL, players can be brought in from other leagues (and not be scrubs) - of course, that also means those players have a disadvantage in individual stats, since stats from other leagues don't count in the stat leaderboards.

Please note the Tonga reference was "rushing roster" and not "rushing statistics" or "rushing attack". The calculation is not strictly off the level of the starting RB, though that is the second biggest factor in that particular formula - the first being the average level of the offensive line.

How did we (Tonga) get to be the league douchebags again? I see a guy here who is taking his own time and trying to bring out power rankings for everyone each game that is based on numbers. He just happens to be a valued member of Tonga. We also have an owner (Chase) who is posting in this thread and has been nothing but cordial, well written, and respectful.

Think what you want about our team. Yeah, we slipped up in week one and lost to a quality opponent, but we have gotten better. We will continue to get better too. Our goal was not an undefeated season, but a League Championship. That goal is still very much alive.

Melbourne, your roster is scary from my seat as the OC of Tonga. The 4 Horseman make me nervous too, along with a few other teams in this league. Should we just roll over because we lost a game? I have news for you........we are not going to go away.

Well-written and straight to the point. I agree with this wholeheartedly.
As always, Sarg, great work!

i agree - great work stag - I do the power rankings up in AAA#2 and have taken flak from some guys each season, but it is all subjective - I don't even use the numbers, I watch a lot of the games and i look at who is better now (what have you done for me lately) mixed with past performance, roster changes and strength of opponent. Most people like it because it adds something to talk about, some take things too seriously.

Teh internets is SERIOUS BUSINESS!

And it's the beauty of these polls: seldom will any two ever be the same. But it sure is fun to talk about.

I just saw this.

You did the Ramekins no favors in providing this kind of bulletin board material for our defense.

I am going to give the boys a pregame talk that will rile them up into a frenzy and will have absolutly no effect on how our little dots interact with their little dots!

Well, to be fair, NMI did score points on your defense. Albeit, 3 . Great game today.
