His style was such that he actually made the line look worse than it was. He was very slow in hitting the hole, where Emmitt was better than almost all other backs at doing that. Emmitt made the line better, where Barry exposed his linemen.

Athletic in that he could have played lacrosse for a major college as well as he played football? Usually the most athletic starts and finishes with Jim Brown, but Bo Jackson would certainly be more of an athlete than Barry. Barry just had loads of juke and spin, with tons of AE in break tackle!

I was going to use the term quickest or most agile. I chose athletic instead. It was not the best word for what I was saying.

Emmitt was good in Dallas because he didn't hit the hole fast, thats the reason Derrick Lassic failed in Dallas is because he hit the hole way to fast and the Linemen hated him for it.

but really, Barry Sanders was the best I ever saw, and he always had a horrible line to run behind. If you put him behind the Dallas OL of those days, he would probably hold every rushing record today.

No. Emmitt hit the hole fast. Sometimes he waited for the blocking to develop, but he hit the hole as soon as it opened. Sanders forced his linemen to hold blocks, which is virtually impossible to do. Lassic was a failure because he did not have the talent that Smith had, lol.

I don't think he would. I doubt he would have done any better than Emmitt. Barry was extremely talented, but he made the line look worse than it was. Detroit had talent on the line. However, they were always accused of having a bad line. Why is that? A lineman can only open a hole for a brief period. They opened the holes, but Sanders preferred to run to daylight as opposed to running off the hip of his blocker. Therefore, any play that was designed to open a small crease would not work for him. He would either pass it by in favor of a larger hole that never developed, or he would decide to hit it too late.

Personally, I feel it was his vision that held him back. Emmitt had much better vision.

there is no way this is correct I have watched a ton of games with Barry in them and he was running for his life. there was something on ESPN a while back and I think and I hope this is right but I may quote it wrong. But they said that Barry gained 70%+ of his yards after being hit. that tells me that he was awesome just in that he was able to break tackles and make people miss. I remember games where Barry would be getting a handoff and also getting hit at the same moment. I am not saying Emmitt was a bad player but if he was at Detroit and Barry was with the Cowgirls there wouldn't be any discussion about who was the best HB. Barry would have it on lockdown and with his abilities he wouldn't have had to worry about ever getting knocked off the throne as the king HB of all time.

I disagree, for all of my previous reasons. If Emmitt would have played in Detroit, the Detroit line would have been considered good.

I wish there was a way for this to have happened as I can't disagree more. I guess a good debate like this is what makes all of us true sports fans.

Well Vegas I am not exactly sure what you were trying to say here. If you want to elaborate I would be happy to carry on the discussion. I may be wrong but I never knew of Marino playing in San Francisco or even Steve Young playing in Tampa Bay. But you may know something I don't.

Steve Young started his career in Tampa. Marino never played anywhere but Miami. Maybe he is thinking of Montana in Kansas City.

so i say Barry Sanders is the best ever, certainly a biased opinion. i'm okay if someone wants to claim Jim Brown or Walter Payton as the best ever. i just dont think anyone else is even in the discussion

I think you have to include Emmitt due to the record. There are some others who could be mentioned... Gale Sayers, Earl Campbell. Those two had shorter careers than they should have. If they had played longer, who knows.
