i guess mixed emotions here, but i was hoping to throw this out there and see where it went. I see where everyone is coming from, and i agree now that its seems a little bit odd and a major change. Maybe something smaller like FS/SS/CB are now considered just DBs. Cost 200 to make, like always, but they can have experience bars for all 3 positions that maybe go up by 1 each game where you play at least one snap there...? Same could work for G/T/C and DE/DT/OLB/MLB (some combonation) maybe K/P, TE/FB, HB/QB/WR... could keep it to the same sides of the ball. So it would now be similar to this:

Offensive lineman (100 FP):
Experience at Guard x/100
Experience at tackle x/100
Experience at Center x/100

Defensive Front Seven (200 FP):
Experience at DE: x/100
Experience at DT: x/100
Experience at OLB: x/100
Experience at MLB: x/100

Defensive Back (200 FP):
Experience at FS: X/100
Experience at SS: X/100
Experience at CB: X/100

Offensive Playmakers (300 FP):
Experience at QB: X/100
Experience at HB: X/100
Experience at WR: X/100

Offensive Utility (200 FP):
Experience at FB: X/100
Experience at TE: X/100

Special Teams (100 FP):
Experience at kicker: X/100
Experience at punter: X/100

So now you would choose one of the 6 catagories when you create a player and have like 10 Experience Points or whatever they would be called to distribute among your positions....
What about this?

positions are also needed for the sim to locate and place players on the field, it's an interesting idea that I think would've worked well if omplemented from the begining, but now would just make a complete mess of things

good idea, bad timing

It could work if attributes were all fully functional. But right now most Kickers/Punters are stronger than most DEs.

Auto progression would have to be adjusted to a system that tracked what position the player actually played somehow i.e. a player on the o-line would get more strength per level than speed.

A lot of work, a lot of complications, and 99.99999999% never will happen.

Make your own sim league the idea does have potential, just not here.

Sorry, but no.

The skills are different from the O-Line to the D-Line, WR to CB, etc.
While some skills do cross over, it is rare to see QB playing WR, WR playing CB, RB playing LB, etc. (and yes, I know some players do multi-task & move positions during their career. But they are the rare cases.)

This idea is unworkable in the current framework of GLB.

I HEART this idea very much!

If Bort ever wraps this up and kicks off a new version, I would then support exactly this.

Flex cost exploits would have to be fixed.

Atheletes would gain game XP by position played per play in games.
Daily XP could be allocated to position of choice.
Atheletes could gain levels in different positions, unlocking SA's by reaching certain levels.
So a fella could be a level 3 WR, level 8 FS, level 2 HB.

Just a general idea, wherein an athelete is rolled up (height / weight) and the whole world is open before him from there.

So to the OP and/or people who support this....can you address the issues brought up so far or are you going to declare this unworkable and let it die?

I somewhat agree with the idea but i don't like the full idea, we can remove the OT and G and just make a position called O-linemen, Remove RB and FB and just make a RB position. And remove CB and S and just make DB's, But removing the entire position wouldn't be smart. This is suppose to be like professional football, not like middle school where we just do conditioning and get assigned positions every week.

I did have a thought like this back in the day.

However, I think it would require a complete re-tool of everything.

Probably more I can't think of off the top of my head.

Agree with Jed, I don't like this suggestion. You need positions. You should have a chance to CHANGE a player's position, at a penalty to their skills, but you need positions.

This addresses the skills upon leveling up, OOP penalties, gives structure, separates player costs, and allows for an easier time in recruiting.

Plus, how are potential recruits supposed to know who they're battling with for PT?

Motion to take this idea one step further. The inherent problems in GLB are due to the game it is based on. With a few simple changes in the offseason-to Australian rules football, the current problems should largely disappear...

Turned into a joke thread and getting bumped because it was listed in the top 11 worst suggestions. So lock.

All but guarantee that it wasn't going to happen, anyways.
