And the guy he takes it from isn't even in my top 5 all time - who cares.
Brett Favre holds a lot of QB records, but that doesn't make him Joe Montana.
I think it's 100% impossible to speculate how one RB would've done in another RB's era. Strength and Conditioning was different, rules were different, Offensive/Defensive Schemes were different... ect.
I watched Barry play here in Detroit for 10 years - he was unbelievable to watch. That's the only way I can explain just how talented he was. But Detroit also played a LOT of 4 WR Run-Shoot that defenses had to spread out to defend - that created some room. When Jim Brown played, teams lined up with 2 WRs, a TE, and in an I. There was very little deception compared to the Counters and Direct Snaps of today.
Would Barry have been just as successful back then as he was when he played? Maybe - probably. Can't say for sure. If we're going to deal with Would's and Could's, then lets just end the debate and give the "Best RB Award" to Bo Jackson.

It's a tough decision which is why it will never be conclusive as to who was the best ever. But it's a good entertaining discussion none the less.

Couple of things left out about JB- he wasn't a HB, he was a FB, and while the competition was "different" then than it is today... JB wasn't exactly known for living the cleanest of lifestyles either. It's not like he had a personal trainer and a dietician stashed away at home. He was smoking, drinking, and out womanizing half the night away right along with everyone else... fact of the matter is that he was just that much better than of an athlete. He was also an all-american in lacrosse, a game that most sportswriters that covered him at the time will admit to being his better sport. JB is the man- Barry is number 2 imo.
