So, a question for the anti-piracy warriors.

I pre-ordered Dead Rising 3 on Steam, and it becomes available in 14 hours.

However, there's torrents up of the game right now that you can download and play. Is that kind of piracy wrong? Is it even piracy? I've bought the game, I just don't have it yet, would it still be "stealing"? The game is not being taken from anybody, I'd just be playing it a day before the optimal sales day.

Yes.

How would you feel if gameplay of Mighty Brawlers, perhaps in an incomplete state, leaked out and was made available to people before you wanted it out?

A day before release is a finished product.

It's also not an MMO like our games, so a day "headstart" has no bearing on anyone else's experience.

And even if it is an unfinished product, the only person being hurt is me. I mean, I've already bought it regardless of whether I end up enjoying it or not.

Also, now that I think about it, GLB2 was up a day before we said it was.

I believe Romo and a couple other people logged in and made some players before it went "live".

The point is that you don't want to lose control of your creation, just like any other company.

You are also supporting an unauthorized distribution channel, so it is hurting others.

How do you feel about store clerks playing the game before the official release date?

Are they also pirating the game?

I have no idea how the rights holder feels about that. Do they authorize it so the clerks are familiar?

Also, does "piracy" extend to doing anything the rights holder disagrees with? Or is it "acquiring and/or distributing something you have no rights to"?

Follow up, are the rights between digital versions and physical versions different? Is it morally wrong to play a digital version that you have the rights to but before release compared to playing a hard copy of the game you have right to before release? Do the publishers get to determine when your rights start and when they end to a product you purchased?

(and before you bring up us banning people from the game, MMOs are services compared to products...every thing is done on servers that we host)

But, then, I guess we are getting to the stupidity of pre-order for digital goods.

The reason they exist with hard copies is store stock selling out, reserving a copy so you know it's there, whereas with digital distribution it can never run out and can have infinite copies that can be copied infinite times.

So are you just buying the right to have the rights to something at a time in the future, without actually having the right to the thing you bought?

I guess it's also different digitally. With retailers, you usually pay a small fee when you "preorder" it, then pay the full price when you actually go to the store for the hard copy.

With digital, you pay the full price of the game from the get-go. With no "extra" fee, thankfully, since the distributor is literally doing nothing for you besides taking your money early.

I dont want to watch the other games. I only want to watch the patriots, watching other games would be a bonus. So why would I want to pay for a service that will only let me watch the games i dotn care about and not the games i want to see?
