Work with enough people who are essentially minimum wage workers, and you begin to realize how much you are giving them outside of monetary compensation, in terms of practical skills and the ability to function in the workplace.

Not saying that. I am saying that I find myself teaching employees a lot of basic concepts that one would think an adult would not need to be taught.

How should they know?

I'm lol'ing over here with you wanting to pay people as little as possible, but at the same time expecting the utmost skill and professionalism.

I thought your argument was always "minimum wage jobs are supposed to be a stepping stone"?

I always pay employees more than I promise, which I hope is more than they expect.

they are supposed to be stepping stones, and I have no issue helping people learn. It is just surprising the things many people do not already know. For instance, I am not just teaching them how to operate and respect equipment, I am teaching them to not drop heavy things directly into hot oil from three feet away. Or teaching them how to properly dispose of their cigarette butts, or how it is a good idea to tuck the lanyard with your house key on it into your shirt instead of having it dangle into everything, or how to speak to people.

It is rare that I do not give a bonus that is above the agreed upon rate.

Which I am sure you do not dole out thoughtlessly just because they showed up to work and did the bare minimum.

Bonuses are incentives, which if structured properly are mutually beneficial for you as the employer and for them as the employee.

How did this turn into me claiming they do the bare minimum? I stated it is surprising what you end up teaching adults. I furthermore stated that the lessons you teach them are as important as the money they receive.
