Humanity as a whole is advancing, but there are certainly instances of empires falling. Asia is replacing the US as a world power, in large part due to their work ethic.

that isn't a completely misguided assessment or anything

That's a common story, and an attractive one given that it promotes the idea that we can do anything we want to if only we put in the effort, but it's completely untrue.

Success =/= doing anything you want to

Truth is, most see the successful guy at the finish line and have no idea how much effort it took to get there. Also, sometimes what we think of as "talent" is really the product of hard work.

Reminds me of the one with the pro golfer... something like:

"I'd give anything to have a golf swing like yours."

"No you'd like to have a golf swing like mine without the effort. Because if you really wanted a swing like mine, you'd have it."

A guy who sits and pounds out story after story isn't going to become Stephen King. King is who he is because of natural talent as a writer, and without it the effort becomes pointless. Even then the combination of talent and effort doesn't guarantee success, it merely improves your odds. The cold, hard reality is that what separates the talented individual from the successful one is circumstance. If you meet the right people, if you get in the right situation, if you capture the tone of the market at just the right time, etc. We don't like to believe that our fate is out of your hands even though it generally is, so we promote the appealing fantasy that you can get what you want if you just work hard enough.

survivorship bias, you might want to read about it

plenty of people who don't make it to the finish line worked their asses off

If you don't try then you definitely won't succeed, but the notion that talent and effort will get you through is a recipe for frustration and disappointment. Essentially, make an effort to capitalize on your talents but prepare for failure instead of assuming success, because you're probably going to get the former instead of the latter.

you can have talent and try hard and still not make it. but the "TRY HARD" part is absolutely a must to be succesful at anything.
