Elusive run still without enough footwork is my guess towards some of that.

Most of my HBs were 95+ carry aware, chicken is going to fall quite short of that but I've always prized the stat not only for its ability to help HBs abilities fire at the right times but also (along with footwork) to help slightly negate heavy footwork/pursuit defenders impacts. They don't just let you walk by guys but they do allow you to take advantage of guys over-pursuing ala strong shifts/cutbacks and 'ghosting' with good enough footwork.

Yup, footwork helps a lot. Also Elusive kinda sucks about going out of bounds in general :/

Yah that must be it...he only has 35 Footwork...next time I'll add more footwork and decrease Return Awareness alot...I started this build to be used as a returner and hb at 1st to help the team i built him for...the next one should see improvements with more footwork instead of the return awareness

Never spend any points in Return Awareness, returner or not.
That skill is u-s-e-l-e-s-s.

So you're saying I should take less bonus on Elusive Rushing? That makes no sense to me...they should have another attribute for players like Instincts or Vision to fix the issue of a ball carrier running out of bounds when no ones around him

I would try slippery. He would only lose 2 elusive points but probably stay in bounds.

I'll test that out on the next PUP

fyi if you are ever going to be fielding punt/kick returns FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T USE SLIPPERY
otherwise it is quite decent aside from combo being better in every way in terms of pathing, slippery has one of the highest rates of skill activation of any carry style and actually works well with stiff arm.

no one wants to hear me on this one but:
Footwork is also quick deceleration.
Sometimes your guy on elusive tries to pull high footwork style moves, if you haven't got them you will fail on the sideline, 75 footwork fixes most of the sideline shenanigans and makes things smooth - and frankly for an elusive back (the only back that should be using elusive style) 75 footwork is well worth the investment.
If you are not a pure elusive you should be using slippery, or combo. If you are but are on the train of 'footwork is useless' like everyone else you will have to use slippery or combo like everyone else.
Edit: I should add that sometimes an elusive runner will choose to run out of bounds to avoid contact, I'm talking about when they run out of bounds way away from any contact, it's often times them trying to run along the sideline for maximum room and failing a footwork check basically.
You CAN use elusive with like 55-60 footwork as well, just you will only eliminate some of the sideline woes instead of most of them.

take it to 35, that reduces fumbles on returns somehow, but never - EVER over that. even just to 15 is 'okay' it's not like the bonus to not fumbling will be that important unless you are a fumble-a-holic anyhow
