That being said, my question is why people prefer using DEs to "stop" the outside run instead of using run stop LBs and defenses that use the safeties to come up and make the tackle?
Some people like sending the De's into flats to stop the run, which can redirect the run, but IMO isn't very effective at stopping the runs, typically teams that run DE flats still give up 4-5 ypc against the sweeps with that play, I'd hardly consider that a good average, but I think it's done to insulate CB's who can't shed Wr blocks from being exposed against the outside rush. It typically redirects HB's inside and gives the LB's and Safeties more time to get to the ball carrier. However it offers next to no pass rush, and isn't good at stopping the off tackle and inside rush, and also allows for deep passing plays to develop. So TE Drive, and TE Post, and any deep WR route is going to do well against it.
