I would just love for a RB, FB or QB to actually attempt to get a first down instead of stepping out of bounds.

To me, it's not about needing Catching (Receiving Hands) if you're wide open. You have to need it even then, or there'd be like among the many mistakes in GLB "Classic" a level above which it's foolish to take Receiving Hands because "X is good enough not to drop an open pass, so why go above X?"

However, a very short open pass, it should take very little Receiving Hands to handle cleanly.

The #1 thing with passing in general, right now, is that pass distance isn't a big enough factor in the ability to catch/complete passes. Screens and other short passes should be very easy to catch; medium routes should be about like they are now; and long passes need to be dropped more, open or not.

And of course, that would buff screens, which would be a very good thing.

Why?

If someone throws you a football from 5 yards away, is it easier to catch than one thrown from 20?

this

wide open, uncontested short passes shouldn't be dropped as much as they are

That would depend on how hard the ball is thrown. I will say that a ball thrown 5 yards by a good QB should be on the numbers and make for easier catches every time where as a ball thrown further downfield may require more of an adjustment by a WR to track the ball down and/or make a catch with a ball thrown low, high or whatever.

A lot of real life HB's who wouldn't be trusted to catch a 20 yard pass are trusted to catch screens and dumps, and generally catch them just fine, when they wouldn't usually catch a long pass.

Strength of the throw also factors in catching when looking at distance... a puff dump off to a HB vs a rocket to a WR on a Slant, so not all short passes are equal. I'd say some adjustment needed but take the route, type, & distance into the equation. Screens and Dump offs do need a buff for sure.

I like the cut of your jib...

Maybe the more pass power a QB has the more Rec Hands are needed to catch it...though every receiver should be able to catch a pass behind the LOS. Isn't it enough that they fall down 70% of the time with sub 50 balance?

So then you turn Pass Power into a negative, and it's already (from what I've read on these boards and also in-game experiences, but more what I've read) a much less important passing skill than the others (Tech/Accuracy/Awareness/Consistency). I get the concept, because a harder thrown ball would be harder to catch, but I'd think a QB would be able to use touch to make the ball more catchable when necessary.

I'd let the ability to catch the pass continue to come from Pass Technique (at least according to the tooltips it does), but effective Pass Technique for catchability would be maybe +50% for a screen/dump, "normal" at 10 yards, and decreasing beyond 10 yards such that typically it would be -50% at 25 yards or something...but that drop off after 10 yards might be faster for Pass Power under X and slower above X (X=40 or 50? I'm thinking most QB's in the game aren't above 40, even in Pro/Vet, but I could easily be wrong on that).

There may well already be a mechanic in the game sort of like that, but if so it probably isn't strong enough-- even if it's even stronger than my suggestion.

Probably your idea about a "behind the line of scrimmage" throw bonus might be the easiest or best idea, instead of mine based on route ran type.

HB Screens: it's not just the catching, but the blocking that needs help too.

Wait, what the hell? We're getting a Kicker change? Why? And how was this not a global GLB alert?

Bingo. Nothing to do with the distance, but the way the ball is thrown.

I am sure Rex Grossman could throw you a ball you will never catch from 5 yards away. And you could float up a lob from 30 yards away that a girl could catch.

If they are going to screw with it, think it through. Should be a function of pass quality (tech) and velocity (power). QB lobs it up to make it easier to catch, the defense should have more time to react and go for the deflection or pick.
