that's sort of the point of this thread...

a regular DT can do everything that a s* DT can do in terms of stuffing the run, and getting hurry type pressure on QBs

many agents are of the opinion that s* DTs just aren't worth the salary hit when they could do a s* OL, or K for the same price

then like you said, the player doesn't really get any stats, so is it worth it for the owner the DT to blow their tier 1 s* slot on a DT?

What I've tried to do a few times is to justify the existence of the s* DT, and haven't had much success

this is the first time where it feels like I might be onto something from both the team side and the player side of the equation

Quality DTs do a lot of dirty work that just does not show up on the stat page. What does show up on the stat page is tackles and TFLs and those are key. Any time a 3rd and short inside run fails to pick up a 1st it is important. They may not get a ton of hurries or sacks when pass rushing but after they do spin cycle and get picked up by another interior lineman or HB/FB that was held in they absorb that blocker and allow a clear shot for the DE or LB. quality DTs are still important but they are not flashy. If you begin throwing in some PDs they are making an all around very important impact on games.

Edit: Assisted tackles are important as well on them. Anything to slow down the interior rush.

And this is because a lot of "agents" don't own teams and/or plan out full rosters. There's 2000-3000 active agents, there's 195 teams. That's less than 10% of active agents that own teams. {Actually less because some of us own two teams.}

Anyway, I said it before in another thread but it bears repeating.

Building a S* DT that is a Combo Pass and Run Defender is a HUGE benefit to the team.

First, the Salary hit isn't that big of a deal and here's why: I can pair a S* DT Combo with a Run DT and for the price of 3.5x DT's. I can run all formations except 5-2 and Goal Line. You're talking about a 50% premium of DT Salary versus having 2 Run DTs and one Pass DT (which is cheap in absolute salary). Against all-run teams, I put two quality Run DTs on the field. Against all-pass teams, I can put a solid DT rusher on the field (most pressure comes from the edges: Over Will Blitz and ZEB). And against balanced teams, I can mix up my formations, but always have on the field a high-quality player that will match/outperform the OLineman he's up against.

The META advantage this gives a TEAM is HUGE. It frees up a Specialist slot on D for the Secondary.

IMHO it's the best S* to build in this tier; not the worst.

His greatness cannot be expressed on a mere stat sheet.

True, and I didn't have a problem with the player per sa but once the team he was created for went away I just couldn't find anybody who would sign him otherwise I wouldn't have retired him so early

you obviously want that or better from a DT, that's not the issue

the issue is, you can get that from a regular DT and don't need use your only T1 s* slot to do it

statistically speaking, check out the HoF
http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/hof?season=13&type=def_data&position=DT&league_id=0&tier=All

only 2 of the top 10 DTs are s*

the argument for s* DTs is that if the player doesn't mind all of the personal sacrifice (in terms of interest level and s* slot) a few coordinators can make great use of s* DTs

the catch of course being you have to find those few teams out there that can do it

what I'm trying to do is show that s* DTs can be interesting dots, and also be beneficial to a large number of teams even without top tier coordinators

I haven't quite convinced myself yet, but at least it looks like I'm on the right path this time

There was a thread a while back ranking the best low tier S*s to build. After the changes this season, I have my order firmly as:

DT>G>OT>C>K>P

I think I might have had the same order before, but I was a bit more wishy washy on G or OT. Now I definitely think G is better than OT. K and P makes zero sense to me.

And for the top tier, I would put it as HB>LB>QB. Middle tier there are too many dots in there to really rank conclusively imo. It would be too dependent on the theme of your team to have a meaningful discussion about ranking them.
